Memory Of A Killer Finale Recap And Ending Explained: Does Maria Know Angelo's Truth?

The true extent of Ferryman’s vengeful streak finally comes to light in the first season finale of Fox’s “Memory of a Killer,” as veteran hitman Angelo goes after FBI Agent Linda Grant to settle a score for a past tragedy. Previously, Detective Dave rightly deduced Angelo to be Henry Bloch’s killer but allowed him to go scot-free anyway out of his personal feelings for Maria and her father. Angelo figured out Ferryman’s true identity to be FBI Agent Linda Grant, who made it a mission for her to make Angelo’s life miserable, in order to take revenge for her son, the late Dr. Robert Parks, whom Angelo had killed five years ago as part of his assignment. Angelo gave up Stefanie Gilchrist, the fixer who handed Dutch the contract of killing Parks, to Linda, but by then, Linda had already made arrangements for Michael and Maria to be taken down. Nicky, who was coerced by Linda to infiltrate Angelo’s family, had a change of heart as she warned Maria in time. Maria was able to survive Earl Hancock’s ambush before Angelo reached her place in time and shot him dead. Michael was protected by Dutch’s enforcer, which left Angelo with one final mission to bring Grant to justice.

Spoilers Ahead

Angelo’s Short Sightedness Costs Nicky’s Life

The finale opens with Agent Linda Grant breaking into Angelo’s luxurious NY apartment, going through his safe and obtaining the files he keeps on each of his targets. As meticulous as Angelo is about his professional dealings, keeping physical evidence of his crimes even while struggling with memory issues is a fatal error. Meanwhile, at the Hudson Springs police station, Dave shares pictures with Angelo that the cops have recovered from Earl Hancock’s house following the events of the last night, and seeing images of his wife, Lea, on the day of her demise, Angelo realizes that unlike what they have assumed thus far, Earl purposefully ran over Lea and pretended it was a drunken driving accident. Dave questions Angelo regarding the possible motive Earl might have had to target his wife, and Angelo lies about not being aware of anything such. However, he now knows full well that Linda Grant, aka Ferryman, had assigned Earl to kill his wife to get even for her son’s demise. Earl’s attack at Maria’s place highlights Dave’s utter failure to anticipate a potential crisis, especially because Maria had already informed him how Earl had threatened her very recently and even her husband, Jeff, wanted to be involved in the investigation and entrusted Dave with her safety.

Angelo eventually learns from Maria that Nicky had warned her about the impending crisis. Angelo calls Nicky, who was about to leave her old life for good, and arranges a meeting. He wants her to help pin down Grant, and to make amends for her betrayal, Nicky is willing to help. Having enough dirt against Grant to expose her for abusing her powers as a federal agent to exploit criminals for her selfish pursuit, Angelo hands a hard drive full of evidence to Grant’s former partner, Agent Roberts, with Joe acting as a middleman. While Roberts relays this intel to his superiors, which initiates a formal investigation on Grant, he meets her to inform her about the situation and mentions Nicky is prepared to testify against her. To lure Grant out of hiding, Angelo has Nicky call her for a meeting, and as speculated, Grant arrives at the location. However, Angelo’s utter failure to anticipate danger and secure the perimeter results in Nicky getting fatally stabbed by one of Grant’s henchman. Angelo kills the assailant and tends to Nicky, but by then it has become too late. Taking Joe as his only backup was never a wise decision, but then again, Angelo couldn’t have bought additional force by asking Dutch for help, as it could have risked exposure. Nicky passes away in Angelo’s arms, and it’s really tragic how she had to pay for Angelo’s oversight.

Agent Grant Gets Her Comeuppance

Joe had attached a tracker on Grant’s car before she fled the scene following Nicky’s murder, and tracking it, Angelo is able to deduce that she is planning to flee from the country with her family—her daughter-in-law and granddaughter. Joe wants to accompany Angelo, as it is understandable that he has formed a father figure in him and wants his best to assist him. However, concerned about Joe’s well-being, along with the fact that everyone around him keeps suffering, Angelo forbids him from following. As Grant is about to leave, Angelo, perched on rooftops, scopes her with a sniper rifle, and the laser pointer is enough to convey to Grant that he will not hesitate for a second to take her down in front of her family. Angelo sets up a meeting with Grant in a warehouse and goes back to Maria to check up on her. It should be mentioned that in the meantime, after returning to her place, Maria vividly remembers last night’s incidents and is naturally shocked to realize Angelo didn’t change a shade while clinically taking down Earl. As Angelo returns back home, she questions him about his indifference, which Angelo dodges by making an excuse about having his senses hardened during his tenure as a Marine. Before Angelo sets out to confront Grant, his conscience acts up for a brief moment as he sees a vision of his brother Michael, who tries to dissuade him from going down this path, in vain.

While waiting for Grant to arrive, Angelo receives a text from Maria, who is about to deliver her child and is headed to the hospital with Jeff. However, for better or worse, Angelo suffers from another episode of memory loss and forgets about it entirely. As Grant arrives, Angelo confronts her about killing Lea, and she admits assigning Earl to kill her. With both of them in an impasse, holding each other at gunpoint, Angelo tries in vain to convince Grant to let go of her vengeful quest by letting her daughter live in peace. Her hatred has darkened her soul to such an extent that she can’t find peace until Angelo is completely ruined. Right at the moment, Joe arrives out of nowhere and disarms Grant. His willingness to prove himself to Angelo that he is capable of taking on field assignments jeopardizes both their lives as Grant has arrived with backup who rain bullets and corner both of them. Angelo runs out of bullets, and Joe prepares to draw the attention of the shooters to give Angelo a chance to take them down. Angelo is shocked to realize Joe has overheard his conversation with Grant and now knows he has a daughter to protect. Joe gets himself shot while trying to give an opening to Angelo, which proves enough for the veteran hitman to take down all of Grant’s henchmen. Angelo tends to a wounded Joe, who asks him to finish the job, and Angelo proceeds to shoot a fleeing Grant to death. Before meeting her end, Grant taunts Angelo about impending troubles, the meaning of which is revealed in the final moments of the finale.

Does Maria Know Angelo’s Truth?

A wounded Joe recuperates in the hospital as Angelo, concerned about his well-being, blames himself for the situation. Dutch assures his old friend that it was not his fault, but knowing that Joe took a bullet for him, Angelo can’t help but feel he dragged the kid into his mess. Dutch raises the idea of finally retiring from this dangerous vocation when they still have the chance, and Angelo has to leave mid-conversation after receiving Maria’s message that she has become a mother. At the hospital, Angelo goes through another episode of memory loss as he forgets his daughter’s name, and Jeff has to handle the situation before it escalates further. Maria brings Angelo to meet with his grandson, Liam, and Angelo has another soul to protect from the dangers of his trade.

Joe regains his consciousness, and while speaking with Dutch, he mentions having no choice other than to protect Angelo, as there was family involved. Joe mentions the phrase ‘a daughter,’ and even though he can’t complete his sentence while reeling from pain, Dutch becomes suspicious about possible secrets Angelo might be keeping from him. Later, while meeting Dutch at his restaurant, Angelo specifically mentions him to let him vet the contracts he takes to assign to Angelo, as he doesn’t want a repetition of the past and doesn’t want to taint his hands by taking an innocent life ever again. Dutch asks Angelo about Joe’s mention of ‘daughter,’ which Angelo connects with Grant’s daughter-in-law. However, Dutch is not convinced, and it remains to be seen how his relation with Angelo shapes up following this incident.

Grant’s warning to Angelo manifests by making Angelo’s greatest fear come true, as Maria receives a stash of files and photographic evidence where Angelo’s contracts and his double life are showcased in vivid detail. Maria already had a hunch that her father was hiding something, and now she is able to connect the dots to realize the horrid truth—that her old man makes an earning by taking lives. At night, Angelo gets a visitor in his NY apartment, and he is not so surprised to see Maria standing in front of him, with the evidence piled up in her hand. In his mind, he always feared this day would come sooner or later; with his memory issues and everything else going on, it’s a surprise how long it actually took for the truth to come out in the open. Even in her death, Agent Linda Grant had the last laugh, as Maria wants to know the truth from her father, which is surely going to ruin Angelo’s family. As the finale ends, Angelo seems at a loss for words, wondering what to say to her daughter as his mountain of lies can no longer keep his secrets.
