'Shrinking' Season 3 Ending Explained & Finale Recap: Did Jimmy Get Back Together With Sofi?

The 3rd season of the AppleTV comedy-drama series Shrinking comes to an end this week, and with showrunner Bill Lawrence confirming that season 4 will feature a completely new story, the finale does feel like a farewell to at least some of the central characters. After having a fight with Paul right before he left the city for Connecticut forever, Jimmy contemplates whether this was the correct move and decides to apologize for his behavior, which is not always an easy thing to do with Paul. Meanwhile, there is a major development in the lives of Gaby and Derrick, while Sean is scared of hurting Jimmy by telling him that he has already moved out of his pool house.

Spoiler Alert

How is Jimmy dealing with Alice leaving for college?

Shrinking season 3 episode 11 begins with Alice packing for college, and it is an emotional moment for both her and Jimmy. She is about to leave home in three days in order to join the soccer team before college officially begins. Alice is concerned about how her father is going to deal with her absence, especially because Paul has also already left town forever. It is understandable why the teenager is so worried about Jimmy, since she has witnessed how loneliness can affect him in the worst kind of ways in the last few years. Shrinking had begun with Jimmy making an absolute mess of his life, mostly because of his inability to cope with his wife’s death, but also somewhat because of the associated struggles with loneliness. Therefore, Alice can only hope that he is now a changed man, having gone through the numerous lessons and realizations that we have been witness to throughout the 3 seasons, as she has to trust him to not go into a spiral again.

Soon, Jimmy has to mediate in a fight between Alice and her childhood best friend, Summer, just a day before she is about to leave for Wesleyan. When Alice wants to hang out with Summer, she turns her down, saying that she has plans with her boyfriend. Summer then goes on to be very mean and tells Alice that it has been quite a few minutes that she has not reminded everyone that she is leaving, alluding to the fact that Alice leaving for college has been at the center of everything that everyone has been doing in the last few weeks, which is apparently very irritating to Summer. The two friends have a nasty argument because of this conversation, and an adult has to play the mediator. Liz and Derek naturally choose to stay out of it, since it is not their place to say anything, and Jimmy takes over, managing to get Alice and Summer at the same ice cream parlor despite them not wanting to see each other.

It really does not take a therapist to understand why the teenagers have been fighting, as it is clearly born out of anxiety and grief over the fact that the two will be separated. Summer had been mean only because she was sad that her best friend since childhood, with whom she spent every day in the last few years, at least, is about to leave. As Jimmy points out, Wesleyan is not close to their homes in Pasadena either, meaning that the two will only get to see each other rarely, when Alice comes to visit. Thus, he advises them to not be bitter about the separation and instead spend as much loving time with each other as possible, for they would definitely regret not doing so otherwise. Jimmy is obviously speaking from personal experience here, as he had only recently given up on the chance to have one last breakfast with Paul because they had had a fight the previous night. He is successfully able to sort out the problem between Alice and Summer, and so he must try and sort things out between himself and Paul as well.

In an effort to do so, Jimmy calls Paul up and apologizes for his earlier behavior, and they have a proper conversation for the first time in weeks. This is when Paul talks about a behavioral pattern in the protagonist, in which he always pictures situations and conversations in his mind and then gets upset or sad when they do not go that particular way. Jimmy had made an elaborate plan of what to say and how to act during the final breakfast with Paul, and now he feels let down because none of it happened the way he had planned. Similarly, he has also made some plans regarding seeing Alice off at the airport, especially about what all he wants to say to her and in what exact wording. Although this is clearly another setup for disappointment, Paul does not intervene in this instance, as Jimmy can have plans with regard to his daughter, after all, since her leaving is going to be a major event in his life.

Predictably, Jimmy was ultimately unable to say the exact words that he had thought of and had been preparing to say to Alice while bidding her farewell at the airport. This is because of the presence of Summer, who has made a last-minute plan of flying to Connecticut with Alice so that she can see her off at her college, instead of saying farewell at home. Summer keeps intervening whenever Jimmy tries to say the words and ultimately gives up, since the teenagers are getting late for their flight as well. But his inability to pull off the scene just as he had planned does not really bother Jimmy, which is indicative of just how far he has come in this journey of acceptance and healing. He admits to being sad and heartbroken to see his daughter leave home but also learns to cope with it with the help of his friends and, most importantly, his lessons from life.

Does Derrick finally propose to Gaby?

Derrick has been considering proposing to Gaby for a few months now, and he is even ready with a ring, but still has to wait for the perfect time to pop the question. Right after Derrick had bought the ring for the proposal, Gaby’s new patient had died by suicide, which had led her down a spiral. Although Gaby had gradually started to accept the loss and come to terms with how she must continue with her life and her profession as a psychotherapist, it was still not the ideal time to propose to her. But Derrick arguably messes up the timing, in the sense that he waits a bit too long, as a result of which Gaby finds out about his plan. While going through the bedside drawer, she finds a box and opens it to check the contents, and obviously realizes what has been going on behind her back. In my personal opinion, Derrick messes up in this regard as well, for he had literally kept the ring neatly packed in a box somewhere his girlfriend could have very easily found it.

Both out of innocent curiosity and sheer excitement, Gaby tries on the ring while her boyfriend is in the washroom but is unable to take it off by herself. Therefore, she has to rush to Liz’s house, seeking help and also to give her the exciting news. Turns out, Liz has known about the matter for a while, as Derrick had told Derek about it, and the latter had told his wife. Beyond the excitement and also the disappointment of her surprise having been ruined, Gaby seems caught up with a different thought—that Derrick should have consulted her before spending so much money, as they had always planned to do. This is because of Gaby’s genuine habit of finding fault in any given situation, which is a natural instinct born out of her failed relationships, and she needs a serious conversation with her friends to decide whether to accept Derrick’s proposal. Ultimately, it is Gaby who arranges a surprise proposal for Derrick, and not the other way around, as he had planned, and the couple have a serious talk as well. Gaby comes to terms with the fact that Derrick had bought her an engagement ring without consulting her because he wanted to make her happy. Thus, at the end of season 3, Gaby and Derrick are engaged.

Is Sean finally able to tell the truth to Jimmy?

On the other side, Sean is unable to tell the truth to Jimmy about how he has moved out of the protagonist’s pool house, and is now living in Derek’s spare house without having to pay any rent. Sean’s only concern is that Jimmy will feel let down to learn that he too is going to leave him alone, that too at the same time that Alice and Paul have also left. For the most part, he tells everyone that he does not want to disappoint Jimmy, but then there are also hints that Sean is scared of being misunderstood by him. Derek constantly pesters him about coming clean to Jimmy, basically to rip the band-aid off and face the truth. But Sean keeps delaying the conversation, instead pretending like he still lives in Jimmy’s pool house, for which he comes to the place early in the morning every day. Therefore, Jimmy asks Sean to host a game night at the pool house so that he can spend time with a friend after Alice has left. This is when Sean finally realizes that he is only making it more difficult for himself and Jimmy to come to terms with the truth by delaying the conversation, and he finally opens up. Just like Derek had predicted, Jimmy is very happy and proud of Sean having moved up the ladder of life, and there is no iota of anger or resentment. He admits that not having Sean constantly around is a slightly sad idea, but then the fact that his new accommodation is just four blocks away means that the two can still catch up whenever they want to.

Why does Paul come to meet Jimmy?

After Alice leaves and he also learns of Sean having moved out of his pool house, Jimmy texts Paul, talking about how he is definitely very sad, but is learning to accept life as is. Much to the frustration of Julie, Meg, Alice, and Summer (the teenagers are visiting Paul and his family at their Connecticut home on their way to Wesleyan), Paul refuses to show any empathy for the protagonist even after such a sad admission, and simply states that he is not Jimmy’s father. But the truth is that Jimmy has indeed looked up to Paul as a father figure, and has clearly loved and respected him much more than his real father. In the last few episodes, it was evident that Randy’s selfish and insensitive nature had always made Jimmy miss a strong and lovable father figure in his life, and so Paul could easily take that place. Thus, when the two had had a terrible fight right before Paul had left, it was because of Jimmy having projected his demands and yearnings from Randy onto Paul instead. Despite realizing all of this, though, Paul now refuses to do anything to help Jimmy until the next morning, by which time he has realized his mistakes. He understands that Jimmy had been so angry at him only because he looked up to him and therefore had developed certain expectations of him over the years. He also surely decides to not let their strong bond end, in some way, on such a sorry note, especially since Jimmy had now apologized for his behavior and wanted to make amends. Thus, Paul suddenly shows up at Pasadena unannounced, at the very café where he and Jimmy were to have their final breakfast together, and then informs him about it. In quite a direct sense, Paul has indeed ‘jimmied’ the protagonist by inserting himself into the difficult parts of his life and by forcefully trying to bring a positive change, in this case, by having invited Sofi to the place as well. In the end, Paul gets over the excuse that he had been making for so long—that he cannot help Jimmy because he is physically so far away from him—and travels to Pasadena, not only to make up for his mistakes and finally admit that Jimmy has been like a son to him, but also to bring about a positive change in his life through Sofi.

Does Jimmy get back together with Sofi?

Shrinking season 3 ends with Paul leaving for the airport, as he has to catch a flight back to Connecticut, having come to Pasadena for just a few hours, and Jimmy walking up to Sofi’s table and sitting down to have breakfast with her. Although he had indeed dated Sofi for some time earlier this season, there is a major change in his mindset now, which has been single-handedly brought by Paul’s strong words in the end. As Jimmy showed some frustration at Paul for having forcefully made the choice of bringing Sofi back into his life, the veteran therapist reminded him that he needs to move on in life. Moving on from a sad or difficult situation does not mean that we completely forget about it or refuse to acknowledge its presence in our lives. Instead, it is just accepting the situation and ensuring that it no longer holds us back in the future. As Paul explains this to Jimmy, he realizes that he must not let his love for Tia, or her death, get in the way of things anymore, especially now that he is truly in need of some company. Thus, we see Jimmy getting back to being friends with Sofi, at least, as he sits down at her table. Given their romantic connection, it is quite obvious that they do get back together, but whether they will be able to stay together in the long run is anybody’s guess. Perhaps we will get an idea when Shrinking returns for a 4th season, although we have been promised a completely new story with the same cast. Whether that means that the characters remain the same and we follow their lives at some point in the future, or whether there will be totally new characters, will have to be seen.
