Pearly Tan apologises, expressing deep disappointment over missing Uber Cup

THE national Uber Cup campaign has suffered a significant setback ahead of the tournament in Horsens, Denmark from April 24 to May 3, after women’s doubles star Pearly Tan confirmed her withdrawal due to a back injury.

Pearly, who partners M Thinaah in Malaysia’s top women’s doubles pair, sustained the injury during the Badminton Asia Championships in Ningbo, China last week, forcing her to sit out the prestigious team competition.

In a social media post, the world number two player apologised to fans and teammates, expressing deep disappointment over missing the event.

"I apologise for disappointing everyone. Recently I suffered a back injury during my last tournament (BAC) and I am upset that I have once again been injured.

"I am truly disappointed by this situation. It is with a heavy heart that I have to say I will not be able to participate in the Uber Cup this time.

"Nothing I want more than to be on court, fighting for every point and standing with my team.

"But due to this back injury, I have to take a temporary break," she said.

Pearly said the recurrence of the injury brought back difficult memories from three years ago when a similar setback nearly derailed her career.

"These past few days have not been easy. I have not been able to sleep and my thoughts have been all over the place, hoping there was still another option.

"Those who know me know I would never leave the court. I fight until the very last point. But this time… my body is telling me to stop and I need to listen.

"I do not want my family to keep worrying about my condition. So for now, I need to take care of myself and allow my body time to fully recover," she said.

She also apologised to her teammates for being unable to join them in the campaign.

"It is very disappointing not to be with my teammates and go through this journey together.

"I am truly sorry that I cannot be there to fight alongside you.

"Please know that my heart is always with the team and I will continue to support every single one of you wholeheartedly, even from afar.

"I promise to do everything I can to come back stronger. For now, all I hope for is a healthy body to return to the court.

"I am sorry for making everyone worry and once again I sincerely apologise to my team.

"Thank you for all your kindness and support. It means so much to me," she said.

National doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky said the decision was made following a late assessment of her condition.

"Pearly is not at the level required to compete.

"We had to make the decision to ensure the team is fully prepared," he said. - April 16, 2026
