KUCHING, April 20: Kuching is poised to make history as more than 300 youth tenpin bowling players and officials from around the world are set to converge in the city for the IBF World Youth Championships 2026 (IBFWYC26).
According to a report by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS), the tournament is scheduled to take place from June 27 to July 7 at Megalanes Sarawak, Batu Kawa.
The Sarawak Amateur Tenpin Bowling Association (ABAS) reported that 37 countries have so far confirmed their participation, with more expected to join in the lead-up to the event.
Among the countries that have confirmed participation are Turkey, South Korea, Sweden, Russia, Guam, Switzerland, Qatar, New Zealand, Italy, Thailand, Singapore, the Bahamas, Finland, Indonesia, Romania, the United States, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Japan, Peru, Canada, Scotland, China, Mexico, Australia, Malaysia, Colombia, Guatemala, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Macau, Spain, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, Malta, the United Arab Emirates and Taiwan.
It will feature singles, doubles, team and mixed team events for both men and women, promising intense competition among top youth bowlers globally.
To ensure smooth organisation, a coordination meeting was held involving UKAS, TVS and ABAS at the UKAS headquarters here today.
The meeting focused on collaboration between ABAS, UKAS and TVS in terms of broadcasting and media coverage throughout the 10-day world meet.
Deputy Director of UKAS Joachim Paggang Labong chaired the meeting, while the ABAS delegation was led by IBFWYC26 logistics and venue manager Jackie Ting Nik Chai.
Among the matters discussed was the proposed formation of a media management committee to coordinate coverage during the championships.
Sarawak, particularly Kuching, will be hosting the world championships for the first time since Malaysia last staged the event in 2003.
The championships are expected to provide a valuable platform for national youth players, especially those from Sarawak, to gain exposure competing against top international players.
At the same time, IBFWYC26 is set to boost Sarawak’s profile as a premier destination for tenpin bowling events in the Asian region, while showcasing the unique charm of Bumi Kenyalang to the world. — DayakDaily
