KUCHING, May 2: As Kuching has been selected as a pioneer for the Healthy Ageing Community project, the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) remains committed to ensuring that Kuching continues to be an age-friendly city, in line with Sarawak’s preparations to attain ageing state status by 2028.
According to MBKS Mayor, Dato Wee Hong Seng, Kuching’s recognition as a member of the World Health Organisation Age-Friendly Cities and Communities (WHO AFCC) network reflects the council’s ongoing efforts to create an environment that safeguards the welfare, dignity, and well-being of senior citizens.
“This is a vital step forward, especially as Sarawak is moving towards becoming an ageing state by 2028, where more than 15 per cent of our population will be senior citizens.
“This means we must act now, we must be prepared now, and we are working towards making Kuching South a model city for healthy ageing communities, covering not only health, but also financial security, mobility, social connectivity, and the overall well-being of our elderly,” he said.
He said this while speaking at the elderly health awareness programme ‘Age Well with G.R.A.C.E’ held here today, as reported by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).
Meanwhile, he urged the younger generation to look after their health, and at the same time to spend time with their parents and the elderly to honour and appreciate their contributions and sacrifices.
He added that all parties must support the Sarawak government’s efforts to develop the State inclusively and sustainably, with priority given to the well-being of the people. — DayakDaily
