'Sold Out On You' Episodes 7-8 Recap: Did Ye-Jin And Mechoori Break Up?

Before I get into this week’s episodes of Sold Out On You, I must first talk about the three major references the show makes this week. First is the song “Paradise,” from “Boys Over Flowers,” which starred Kim Bum as one of the F4 members (not going to lie, he was my favorite back then, too), then came mention of Ahn Yeo-Seop’s role as Jin-U in “K-pop Demon Hunters,” and finally the reference to “Business Proposal,” with the song playing in the background too. Anyway, you were likely able to spot those throwbacks, but I suppose the first one is a bit too old for newer K-drama fans. The show has been interesting so far, but predictable at the same time. I think this week’s episodes were the most fun of all, but I also didn’t like the ending of episode 8, which is boring and trope-y. There were so many ways things could’ve turned out, but a break-up, meh, I don’t like it. I’m also a little bit confused about what the next 4 episodes will be about when everything has already been revealed. I mean, sure, Ye-Jin needs to rebuild her life, but an episode or two is enough for that. What more are we going to see? Eric’s fight? I suppose. Anyway, with that said, I think it’s time to jump into episodes 7 and 8.

Spoiler Alert

Did Ye-Jin Actually Kiss Matthew?

Sold Out On You episode 7 opens where episode 6 ended, with Ye-Jin kissing Matthew and falling asleep on his shoulder. But the truth is, she had tossed her pills, and when he showed up earlier than expected, she pretended to be asleep on the couch and then ended up faking her “sleep walk,” leaving Matthew completely stunned after kissing him. Instead of leaving her on the couch, Matthew thought it fit to put her to sleep in the room and ironically fell over while trying to walk out. I’m not going to lie, the clumsiness is quite hilarious and adorable, too. Anyway, when Ye-Jin notices Matthew getting clumsy, she accidentally reveals the truth about having seen him fall earlier, proving that she wasn’t asleep at all. So yeah, she actually kissed him, but why? Well, because she likes him, of course! Hilariously, Matthew spends the whole time after that night avoiding Ye-Jin in whatever way possible, because all he can think about is the kiss. Sparks are very clearly flying, and even Jin-Yi notices them enough to join them for breakfast, which is when Ye-Jin learns that Matthew doesn’t eat spicy food. Jin-Yi later tells Ye-Jin not to mistake Matthew’s kindness for anything more. On the other hand, Eric reveals to his assistant that he cancelled his flight back to France, and the only things packed in the suitcase are the LPs his sister sent to him. His first plan of action is to get HIT to reinstate Ye-Jin, by threatening that L’Etoile won’t work with them unless Ye-Jin is the host.

What Happens With Love Triangle Number 2?

Back at Deokpung-Ri, Mu-Won shows up acting all fancy for the village festival happening soon. He’s immediately smitten by Ae-Ra, who’s making cupcakes in her cafe. When Kwang-Mo yells for her, she tells Mu-Won that she charges double for people from Seoul. He’s happy to pay the price. Later, we get a flashback of Ae-Ra and Kwang-Mo from years ago. Apparently, they’ve been a thing right from childhood, and Kwang-Mo’s heart has always skipped a beat for her, but in a shocking turn of events, when the festival begins, and Sung-Mi shows up to bring Ye-Jin back, she supports Kwang-Mo in his endeavours to win the competition. The teams are Deokpung-ri 1 and 2. Our team is 1, and when Kwang-Mo notices Sung-Mi winking at him while arm wrestling a man double his size, he ends up getting energized and winning. This is when he realizes that he might be over Ae-Ra now, and that he doesn’t feel any kind of jealousy when Mu-Won is with her; instead, he feels his heart skip a beat with Sung-Mi. Much later, Sung-Mi asks him if she can text him, and she actually does send him a picture from the broadcast station, but Jung-Mok tells him that she probably sent the selfie to ask him to buy the product she’s trying to sell (sigh, men). He ends up buying 10 of them. But anyway, there’s no love triangle anymore, and I think each of these couples will get their happy endings.

What Happens At The Village Festival?

When the festival is about to begin, Eric also shows up, along with Sung-Mi and Ki-Hong, so the team is reinforced with young people. You’d imagine this would make it easy for them to win and for some time it does, but when it comes to the charades game, Eric is really good, while all Matthew can think about is the kiss, because Ye-Jin keeps pointing at her lips, so they end up losing. Moreover, when it comes to the relay race, Matthew switches places with Jin-Yi and then completely skips giving the baton to Ye-Jin, getting the team disqualified, because he knows she twisted her ankle earlier. Just open your mouth and tell them what’s happened, no! Ultimately, they lose the TV too. After the whole thing is done, Jin-Yi talks to Matthew, and Eric talks to Ye-Jin. The latter asks Ye-Jin to go back to her job at HIT. She says she needs this time to breathe and relax, because she’s been so stuck on work for too long. He says he’ll wait forever if he has to, but he wants her to return. On the other hand, Jin-Yi basically tells Matthew he can commit to Ye-Jin because she knows for sure it’s not just kindness. But she also tells him about her own feelings so that she can get it out of her system. I guess this gives Ye-Jin and Matthew the freedom to be together, and that’s exactly what happens at the end of the episode.

What Happens To Som-Yi?

Sold Out On You episode 8 mostly focuses on Som-Yi and her relationship to the world. So far, she’s been the student sitting in the back of the class, and people don’t even remember her name, but she wants to change all that by becoming class president. To become class president, Som-Yi needs some guidance. Lucky for her, Ye-Jin is in town, and she can help her with her announcer brain. At the same time, Som-Yi and Kwang-Mo end up seeing Ye-Jin and Matthew holding hands while walking out of the house, but Som-Yi wants him to end up with her sister, so she feels bad about it. Ye-Jin and Matthew also have a bet that if Ye-Jin wins, Matthew has to say yes to everything she asks to do. She asks to go to the farm with him, and that’s where she sees Som-Yi practising. Ye-Jin gives Som-Yi three lessons to become the perfect candidate who will not be affected by the fact that she wears a mask to school. The lesson goes on for a while, and Ye-Jin returns to Matthew in the evening.

Finally, Som-Yi goes to school and gives her speech; she’s really good at it and ends up winning. Her classmates tell her that they thought she didn’t even speak, but now she’s finally got friends just like she wanted out of this endeavor. Som-Yi messages her sister and then calls Matthew to tell him the news. She also thanks Ye-Jin “coach” for helping her out. She tells Jin-Yi she’ll be late, because the class wants to celebrate together. But the next day, Som-Yi wakes up with new bleeding rashes on her body, freaking Jin-Yi out. She goes straight to Matthew for help, and he takes Som-Yi to the hospital. Before Ye-Jin can go along, Jin-Yi tells her that she made a big mistake listening to her that day and buying the Good Morning cream, which led to Som-Yi having this problem. Turns out, it causes her to have a reaction to eggs and flour-processed products, so she can’t eat anything fun like hamburgers and fries, which she tried for the first time with her classmates. Som-Yi is certainly fine now, but Ye-Jin still blames herself for what’s happened. Later, Som-Yi tells her sister that her coach was Ye-Jin. Jin-Yi thanks Ye-Jin for what she’s done for her. Jin-Yi says she knows that Ye-Jin didn’t do it intentionally, but she can’t forget the image of her on the broadcast, saying the cream was safe. She finally ends by asking her to go back to work. I guess, in a way, it’s her telling her that she’s forgiven her.

Does Ye-Jin Agree To Go Back To HIT?

The romance between Ye-Jin and Matthew begins now, slow and cute, just like her village reset. But things are not working out elsewhere. Eric’s sister shows up in Korea and acts all high and mighty. But later on in the episode, it’s revealed that Ye-Jin’s fears were right, and she took the right call in cancelling the broadcast, because the microbial levels were exceeding the normal limit. Eric does a press conference explaining this, and apologizing to both Ye-Jin and the customers for the damage caused. Now HIT’s in big trouble, because they need to bring Ye-Jin back, but she refuses to return. It’s the right decision in my opinion, considering how they treated her like crap all this time.

Is Matthew To Blame For Som-Yi’s Scars?

Eric finds himself in trouble after the press conference, and Michelle and the board want him to take responsibility. He also learns that Ye-Jin is rejecting all broadcast requests. At the same time, Ye-Jin spends the night crying about what happened with Som-Yi. She can’t seem to catch a break. We also learn that she took money from the company that made the Good Morning cream back in the day, because her mother cut her off and told her that she retired, sacrificing her own career so that it wouldn’t harm Ye-Jin’s. But when she found out about the payment, she told Ye-Jin that she’s not her mother anymore. Yet, she still keeps an eye on what she’s doing to date. Ye-Jin even ends up sleep walking, and wanting to apologize to Som-Yi, which Matthew sees, of course, and he finally realizes it’s time to tell her the truth. It’s gone on for too long.

In the ending of episode 8, Ye-Jin ends up finding a picture of Matthew at Usu, and an ID card as well. She realises he’s the one who created the Good Morning cream. At the same time, Eric shows up to meet Matthew, and asks him if he’s one of the reasons Ye-Jin isn’t coming back to work. As they discussed earlier, they need to bring her back before it’s too late, so why isn’t he doing anything about it? The episode ends with Matthew admitting to Ye-Jin that he made the “trashy” cream that ruined her life. He goes as far as to say that their time together has been suffocating him. Ye-Jin wonders if he had some reason for not telling her so far, but he doesn’t. To send her back, he tells her that he was guilty, which is why he brought her to the village. He just wants her to go back now. This ending is truly frustrating because we all know he doesn’t genuinely feel that way, and he didn’t tell her because he didn’t want to ruin what they had going on. Guess we’ll have to wait to see how things change and how he resolves this misunderstanding.
