The Wonderfools Recap And Ending Explained: What Happened To The Child Of Eternity?

Give it up to Kang Eun-kyung and Heo Da-joong for assembling all the familiar elements of the superhero-comedy subgenre, and producing something as magnificent and unique as “The Wonderfools,” a story about bumbling outcasts who try to come to terms with their reality while attempting to save their hometown. Previously, Eun-kyung has shown her mastery in the emotionally charged drama and fantasy genres with acclaimed series like “Bread, Love, and Dreams” and “Gyeongseong Creature,” which explains how “The Wonderfools” seamlessly blends action and comedic elements, balancing light-hearted and darker tones. The series also craftily incorporates political allusions, which adds depth to the narrative and makes for an exciting watch.

Wunderkinder Project

Set in 1999 in Haeseong town, the series focuses on Eun Chae-ni, a mischievous, messy, clumsy goofball in her mid-twenties who shares a love-hate relationship with her sole guardian, her grandma, Kim Jeon-bok, the wealthy owner of a local restaurant. Chae-ni has struggled with health issues all her life since undergoing heart surgery at an early age, and in fear of her condition, Jeon-bok has never let her venture into the world beyond their small hometown. Reasonably, at present, when Chae-ni learns she doesn’t have much time left after being diagnosed with a terminal heart disease, she decides to make a desperate attempt to move away on her own to enjoy life to the fullest while she still can. Experiencing the wonders of the world is on her bucket list, and to do that, she needs serious funds. To arrange that, Chae-ni convinces her two friends, both of whom are klutzy buffoons like her, middle-aged Son Kyung-hoon and restaurant employee Kang Ro-bin, to kidnap her and ask her grandma for a ransom. However, things go awry when Chae-ni suffers a heart attack and passes away, and in fear of getting framed for her death, her friends decide to leave her corpse in a local dumping ground. They come across Lee Un-jeong, a mysterious city hall civic employee who has recently arrived in town from Seoul and is investigating a recent string of disappearances near the dumping ground. Un-jeong recognizes Chae-ni from their last interaction and tries to interrogate the friends, who end up getting engaged in a scuffle and, along with Chae-ni, fall into a pool of chemical waste at the dumping ground. Shockingly enough, Chae-ni comes back to life and temporarily disappears from the place. As it turns out, Chae-ni has gained the ability to teleport, Ro-bin has gained super strength, and Kyung-hoon has gained the ability to stick to any surface. The inexplicable incident remains a secret between all four and is connected with the dark past of both Chae-ni and Un-jeong.

Two decades ago, Haeseong Orphanage used to be a secretive facility for illegal experiments conducted by Dr. Ha Won-do. A researcher who gained acclaim in Germany for his work in cell regeneration, Won-do probably gravitated towards Aryan master race ideology to come up with his own dream of conquering death by creating superior, mutated humans. His infamous Wunderkinder Project saw the vile researcher inject 72 kids with an experimental serum, half of whom perished due to terrible after-effects, while a number of the survivors suffered abnormalities of different kinds. Having no qualms about the children suffering and dying for his selfish goal, Won-do saw them as disposable assets, simply a means to an end. Un-jeong was among those who survived and manifested powers as he harnessed telekinesis. Among his fellow captive orphans, Kim Pal-ho gained the ability of gravity control, Seok Ho-ran, who formed a filial relationship with Won-do, gained the ability of telepathic manipulations, and Seok Ju-ran, who developed a fondness for Un-jeong, manifested the ability of hallucination creation. One unnamed child, with whom Un-jeong shared a bond of friendship, defied death by gaining the ability to resurrect himself after death, and was dubbed by the researcher as the Child of Eternity. Like the creation of Doomsday in Superman lore, Won-do killed Child of Eternity multiple times to push his resurrection ability to the limits, and seeing his friend suffer, an emotionally distraught Un-jeong lost control over his powers. His rage caused cataclysmic destruction in the orphanage, resulting in the deaths of some orderlies and children. Won-do was arrested, as his crimes came to surface, and the surviving children were rescued with the help of Jeon-bok, who went by the name Madam King back then, and was one of the patrons of the experiments. Jeon-bok tried to protect the Child of Eternity, who suffered from brain death, but his heart remained alive. Realizing the child would have to spend the rest of his life in a comatose state, Jeon-bok made the hard decision to transplant his heart into her granddaughter, Chae-ni, who used to suffer from a heart condition. Un-jeong blamed himself for the incident, and at present, he continues to try to blend in with the masses to keep his identity from getting exposed. Pal-ho, Ju-ran, and Ho-ran, who felt abandoned and betrayed by the rest of the world for having their ‘father’ taken away from them, lived as outcasts. Jeon-bok has lamented the fates of the hapless children all her life, and has kept her granddaughter always within her reach to ensure the blowback of the past incident doesn’t reach her.

Doomsday Cult And the Return of Won-do

Presently, Won-do has been released on parole, and he has been working with Wunderkinder Project chairman Nam Sun-gyu, who wants him to restart his efforts to find the miracle child. An old Sun-gyu is not long for this world, and he wants to escape death by having Won-do use the Child of Eternity to create his version of ambrosia. Won-do has gathered his surviving children, Pal-ho, Ju-ran, and Ho-ran, and has returned to Haeseong to complete his unfinished business. This time, Won-do has turned to the shield of religion to hide his true, nefarious motives, creating the Church for Eternal Salvation. Exploiting a bunch of gullible followers by showcasing the abilities of the enhanced ones, Won-do and his lackeys have successfully spread a rumor of impending apocalypse, the kind which was common in doomsday cults during the turn of the millennium, to gain additional funding from the townsfolk for his experiments. In the meantime, the dumping ground, where experimental serum has been littered, has infected and transformed a number of people who have been abducted by the church’s missionaries. In case Won-do is unable to find the Child of Eternity, he plans to infect the whole town on the off chance of having a new Child of Eternity emerge among them. The usage of powers often comes with troubling side effects, and overexertion of one’s abilities might put their lives in danger. Won-do has promised his enhanced enforcers to formulate a cure for them from the Child of Eternity’s blood, to get rid of the side effects. In the meantime, Un-jeong decides to put Chae-ni’s powers to the test and uses his telekinetic powers to secretly trap her to verify whether she is the Child of Eternity in question. Chae-ni teleports, and the entire incident is witnessed by Kyung-hoon.

After realizing that they have gained powers since the incident in the dumping ground, and knowing Un-jeong, who is someone who not only possesses powers but also knows how to use them, the trio seeks his help in controlling their abilities. Initially unwilling to assist these goofy misfits, Un-jeong decides to stay by their side after his chance encounter with Pal-ho. Unlike other surviving enhanced ones, Un-jeong knows Won-do for who he is, a monster who exploited children and has still kept his test subjects under his control. Won-do is able to reach Jeon-bok after questioning and killing Wunderkinder Project Director Mr. Choi, who keeps the truth about the Child of Eternity hidden from him and his lackeys. Jeon-bok seeks help from one of her associates, a private detective named Jun-mo, to investigate the Church of Eternal Salvation and Chae-ni’s situation after learning that her granddaughter has manifested powers.

Ju-ran pays a visit to Un-jeong and reveals that she tried to comfort him during their orphanage days by creating the comforting presence of his mother, from whom he was separated at a young age, a trauma he hasn’t been able to overcome. Un-jeong defends Chae-ni from becoming the victim of Pal-ho, and during a cleaning drive with the collaboration of Eternal Salvation missionaries, engages in a battle with him. Chae-ni teleports to the scene with Ro-bin and manages to save Un-jeong from a near-death situation by teleporting him somewhere close to the North Pole. However, while doing so, she puts herself in the impact zone and dies, only to return to life. Un-jeong is now able to confirm that she is a Child of Eternity, and reveals Jeon-bok’s past to her. Shattered to her core upon learning that her grandmother was part of something so vile, she confronts Jeon-bok and learns about everything. Chae-ni learns about the Wunderkinder Project on her own to get an idea of the harrowing torment the poor orphans were subjected to. She approaches Un-jeong and shares her inner conflict regarding the entire situation, and Un-jeong comforts her by saying none of them got to choose how things shaped up. Unbeknownst to Chae-ni, Un-jeong has recently made a deal with Won-do despite detesting him to the core. Un-jeong gives up Chae-ni to the evil researcher in exchange for learning about his own past, as Won-do manipulated him by revealing his birth mother is still alive. While this betrayal might feel surprising, given how much Un-jeong despised Won-do and everything he stands for, in light of how much he craved a reunion with his mother, it is an understandable decision, albeit not justifiable. For what it’s worth, Un-jeong had left a few sachets of coffee jelly in Chae-ni’s pocket, knowing that consuming them would result in a caffeine-induced heart rate escalation, which would cause Chae-ni to harness her teleportation abilities. However, Chae-ni messes up, and despite being able to escape from the facility, returns right back and remains captured. Getting his file containing his past history, Un-jeong plans to leave Haeseong for good.

Ro-bin learns about Un-jeong’s actions and confronts him as the duo almost lock horns with each other, before Jeon-bok summons Un-jeong to plead with him to reveal where Won-do has held Chae-ni captive. Jeon-bok sympathizes with Un-jeong, as she is aware of how much the poor orphans had to suffer at the hands of Won-do, and she regrets financially aiding the project every moment of her waking life. Jeon-bok’s warm, understanding gesture breaks through Un-jeong’s cold exterior, and he agrees to help her in a rescue mission. Un-jeong also finally acknowledges the fact that he has grown fond of these oddball characters and has found a place to belong. Thanks to Jeon-bok’s influence, Un-jeong, Ro-bin, and Kyung-hoon manage to rally nearly two hundred people for a mock protest against the Eternal Salvation Church to create a distraction, while Jun-mo leads them towards an underground entrance that leads to the facility. Jun-mo thanks Un-jeong for letting the captive orphans escape Won-do’s clutches on the fateful day, and reveals he was one of the experimental test subjects.

Do Chae-ni and Co. Prevent the Apocalypse?

The trio breaks into the facility, neutralizes the security, and rescues Chae-ni, prompting Won-do’s enhanced enforcers to battle them. Ro-bin incapacitates Pal-ho, but Ho-ran manages to exploit Un-jeong’s insecurities, causing him to temporarily lose control over his powers once again and create a huge turbulence in the facility. Eventually, Chae-ni’s comforting presence is able to compose him and get him back to his senses. In the meantime, Won-do has taken Chae-ni’s blood to create a concoction in order to formulate Chairman Sun-gyu’s miracle death-defying serum. However, upon being injected, Sun-gyu initially rapidly de-ages, only to suffer a severe blowback as he ages forward even faster and dies in a drained skeletal form. Sun-gyu’s private militia, who act as the security detail of Won-do’s operation, turn on him, but Ju-ran is able to make them forget about the entire incident.

Meanwhile, Kyung-hoon is able to find out that the large-scale apocalypse conspiracy is indeed true, as Won-do plans to douse the entire town with his experimental serum to turn the survivors into enhanced beings, as it will increase his chances of creating a new Child of Eternity. Won-do mercilessly continues to push his enforcers to do his dirty work without ever caring about their predicament, and in the false hope that their father will keep his promise, Pal-ho engages in an intense battle with Un-jeong. While the latter survives, Pal-ho succumbs to his death by overexerting himself past his limits. Un-jeong confronts Won-do for a final time, and realizing that hoping for his reformation is a fool’s errand, he decides to take him down. However, a  private militia has Un-jeong surrounded, and they fire upon him. Using his powers, Un-jeong turns the bullets towards them, which wipes out the militia and results in Won-do getting fatally shot. Un-jeong’s bullet deflection causes a massive explosion, following which Won-do’s situation is aggravated. Desperate to save their father, Ju-ran injects him with the miracle serum created from Chae-ni’s blood, but to no avail. Enraged, she asks Ho-ran to focus on the completion of the mission at hand by sending a truck full of mutation serum.

Unable to find Un-jeong following the explosion in the facility, the trio of friends become hopeless, believing they won’t be able to stop the upcoming apocalypse. However, Chae-ni’s indomitable spirit encourages Ro-bin and Kyung-hoon to go searching for the truck, and they realize the fireworks donated by the church for the millennium day celebration will be used to spread the mutating serum across town. In the meantime, a vengeful Ju-ran takes control over Un-jeong to make him turn against his friends, until Chae-ni is able to teleport him elsewhere to have him break free from the mind control. Ju-ran attacks the team by taking over the minds of militia and townsfolk. A prolonged fight ensues where Kyung-hoon turns out to be the MVP by imprisoning all the mind-controlled thralls.

Ho-ran learns about Pal-ho and Won-do’s death, and asks her only surviving family, Ju-ran, to stop her vengeful quest, to no avail. A desperate Ho-ran tries to take down Un-jeong by taking Chae-ni’s guise to get close to him and stab him, but one of the missionaries mistakes her identity and fatally stabs her. Ho-ran perishes in Un-jeong’s arms, and it is revealed that she tried to use her powers to comfort all the captive orphans in the facility. Seeing her only surviving family perishing, Ju-ran has a fit of rage and uses all her power to bring everyone in the town outside. A blimp/ airship approaches in the sky, which contains the mutation serum that will infect the entire populace of the town.

An injured Un-jeong is too weak to use his powers to send the blimp away, which prompts Chae-ni to step up to form a plan to save the day. Following her command, Ro-bin throws her and Kyung-hoon onto the blimp, before Kyung-hoon is brought safely to the ground with Un-jeong’s help. He uses his powers to allow Chae-ni to stick to the surface of the blimp and teleport it away. Just as the blimp detonates, Chae-ni teleports it close to Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, one of the places she wished to visit before dying. Seeing Won-do’s plan fail in such a grand way, a broken Ju-ran dies in agony. Aside from Kyung-hoon’s daughter, Cheong, who was not mind controlled by Ju-ran thanks to her father blocking her ears with headphones, no one in town remembers what happened. Un-jeong, Jeon-bok, Ro-bin, and Kyung-hoon wait for Chae-ni’s return for a long time, but at one point, they too realize that she has probably passed away. In honor of her sacrifice, a memorial service is held; in typical Chae-in fashion, she visits her own service to gorge on the food and surprise her grandma. As it turns out, she had survived the explosion, but it took a long time for her to teleport her way back home. Chae-ni reunites with Un-jeong, both of them having professed their feelings for each other previously, and the lovers reunite with an emotional embrace. The team of Haeseong’s misfit superheroes is ready to take on the next threat as the season comes to an end.

Is Won-do Alive?

In the mid-credits scene, the destroyed facility comes into focus, and it is revealed that, thanks to the serum in his system, Won-do has survived the fiery explosion and being fatally shot. It just took a longer time for him to manifest his resurrection ability, and needless to say, this spells danger for Un-jeong and his team.
