'The Bear' Season 5 Episode 2 Recap: Can Syd And Richie Handle The Pressure?

Episode 2 of the final season of The Bear is titled “Lamb.” I don’t know if I should take it as the innocent, pure lamb going down, or as a reference to Syd making sure she doesn’t curse or yell despite the chaos that has been this day at the restaurant. The episode also takes us back to some emotionally charged moments, specifically for Sugar, and I think it’s a running theme that will carry forward in the rest of the episodes, where each character gets a kind of goodbye of sorts through a chaotic mixture of memories. Tina seems to take the front seat again in trying to make things work, alongside Syd, of course, who seems to be way too overwhelmed by everything that’s going on right now. With so much dirty water everywhere, there is no way these people are going to think straight, but they will definitely open tonight. So with that said, let’s get into the second episode of  season 5.

Spoiler Alert

What Is Happening at The Restaurant?

Episode 2 opens with everyone stressing out about the pipe having exploded. While Syd tries her best to keep calm and delegate work, this is clearly something she’s still not used to. There’s a scene pretty early on in the episode when Carmy is cleaning up the drains, which is making the pipes leak more somehow. Syd gets so easily distracted, like a person with ADHD saying that the cigarettes are the reason the restaurant is flooding, and Carmy just says he stopped smoking. It’s all a bit topsy-turvy for sure. The only things salvageable are useless beer cans and waist aprons that they don’t really use. Richie’s just happy that the merch is still alive, which I can’t lie is kinda funny. Truth be told, everyone seems to be shattering. Specifically, the Spanish workers and Sweeps. Tina overhears Sweeps talking to someone about being jobless and willing to do anything, even night shifts. She doesn’t bring it up to him, because she knows now is not the time for that sort of thing. But as wide as her smile is, she’s clearly holding it together for show.

To make matters worse, Jimmy chooses this day to bring Cheese, Computer’s niece, to inspect the building and make life hell for Syd. She, too, believes the restaurant is not going to sell. But they have another idea. While they do suggest the cursed “Franchise” root, they also suggest selling the space above the restaurant to other people to build a hotel or a condo. They think they have the air rights – a way for people to lease out the empty space above their properties. Never mind the fact that Cheese believes the restaurant is built on a sinkhole; this way, they can make money. But the thing at the bottom of all of this is the fact that the foundation of the restaurant is dodgy. Whether you look at the way Syd keeps taping things up to cover the cracks, or telling people she can keep the restaurant running even though her initial plans are not going to work, it all looks like trying to save a burning house. To make matters worse, Unc decided to cancel the Wagyu order without telling Syd or Tina, making their lives a literal living hell. Syd also made the ribs for “family,” which means that they can’t be used as extras either. The app is still down, but that’s okay, because they’re going to keep going anyway. Meanwhile, Syd’s got two of the guys working on a dishpit in the locker room as backup, and Ebra is looking for spare spoons and dishes so they can keep serving.

Why Does Carmy Scare Syd?

Syd’s trying her best to stay composed, despite whatever is going on around her. She says to Jimmy that she doesn’t listen to the world; she listens to her crew, which is quite a statement that would definitely put a jolt of confidence in my body. Despite not being able to prep for service, Syd thinks they’re going to be able to serve people by the end of the day. Earlier, though she and Carmy were meant to be prepping, they were stuck doing other things, leaving Tina worried for her life. But Luca helps, and eventually, Carmy and Syd are back in the kitchen. This is when the guy suddenly decides to yell “Let’s Go” as if it won’t trigger a series of traumatic memories in Syd’s mind. Carmy thinks he’s being helpful in that moment, providing a boost of energy for Syd, but she’s immediately repulsed and tells the guy to take it down by at least 5-15%. I forgot this was a comedy.

What Does Tina Represent?

In episode 2’s ending, Tina finds herself in the worst situation possible after having seen Sugar cry. But she didn’t just deal with Sugar; as the hours have been passing, she’s been seeing everyone crumble under the pressure of losing what they used to love. Tina puts on a brave face for Sugar, telling her that her daughter might not be able to see her much, but when she does see her, she’s going to be delighted. Sugar thinks this whole thing would’ve been a waste if the restaurant shuts down, but Tina tells her that her daughter is not going to care that she’s an ambitious mother. Though Tina is putting on a brave face for literally everybody else, the episode ends with her tearing up in the bathroom because she can see that this is the end. Her dream now feels like a premonition of sorts, for the future of the restaurant and for her. For someone who found family in a place like “The Beef,” but won’t find this kind of happiness anywhere else. On the other hand, Marcus has also asked Richie to reserve a seat for his father, so that he can see what his son does. When Luca suggests he needs to do something to make him proud, Marcus tells him he’s basically a stranger to him, so it’s like impressing any other customer. I do think this shows a level of professionalism in these characters. They truly love what they do, and this is the end of something they all created together. Or at least that’s what it feels like for the moment.
