Apple Pay now lets you pay using American Express points

American Express has announced a new way for cardholders to redeem their rewards points: they can be used to pay for Apple Pay transactions. Here are the details.

American Express points can be redeemed during any Apple Pay transaction

Starting today, Apple Pay users can use their American Express points to pay for everyday transactions, right within the Apple Pay interface.

When checking out online or in stores, American Express cardholders will see the option to select ‘Use Rewards’ instead of putting the full charge on the card itself.

Eligible Card Members can apply Membership Rewards points directly within the existing online or in apps Apple Pay payment experience — without needing to leave checkout, open another app or complete additional redemption steps. Here’s how:

Shop online or in apps on iPhone or iPad Select Apple Pay at checkout Choose an eligible American Express® Membership Rewards® Card Select “Use Rewards” during checkout and enter the amount to apply toward the eligible purchase. You can use points to cover all or part of your purchase. Redeem Membership Rewards points seamlessly by completing the Apple Pay transaction

When a user redeems Membership Rewards points through Apple Pay, Apple does not retain any transaction information linked to the user.

With Apple Pay continuing to increase in popularity, this new capability makes redeeming American Express points easier than ever.

And with Apple Pay UI changes coming in iOS 27 to make it easier to update payment methods, perhaps we’ll see similar efforts from other companies in the months ahead.
