Silo Season 2 Full Recap: Things To Know Before Season 3
10 小时前
Following the cliff-hanger ending of the first season of Apple TV+’s dystopian thriller, “Silo”, which saw Juliette learning the true nature of the outside wasteland, when she survived after being sent outside, the second season of “Silo” takes an altogether different approach by going for an interconnected, parallel storytelling. On the one hand, we have Juliette venturing into the neighboring dilapidated Silo 17, which serves as a literal and figurative cautionary tale for what awaits silo residents if all-out rebellion breaks out, whereas on Silo 18, Juliette’s survival triggers a series of events that send the residents hurtling towards a similar fate. Amidst all this, viewers also get a glimpse of the truth about what event triggered the apocalypse, which led to the creation of the silos in the first place, which will be the central narrative focus of the upcoming third season.

Juliette Uncovers the Truth of Silo 17The second season begins with a flashback set in neighboring Silo 17, where established order has ceased to exist as denizens have rebelled against IT engineers – believing they hold the answers to all the dastardly authoritarian secrets. The rebellion, which has taken a severe toll, finally succeeds, and the sheriff of Silo 17, the leader of the rebels, guides hundreds of survivors outside their silo – only to get a toxic environment that gets to them immediately and results in the deaths of everyone. At present, Juliette watches the lying skeletons of Silo17 denizens in horror and manages to get inside the silo. Thankfully, the environment inside is not contaminated, and Juliette no longer has to depend on her damaged suit to survive after her oxygen supply gets depleted. The partially flooded, almost darkened silo appears completely vacant, and Juliette tries to make her way towards one of the levels of the IT section, where electricity appears to be still available. While trying to make her way towards the level by building a makeshift bridge and whatnot, Juliette reminisces about the first time she ventured to the mechanical department in Silo 18 and found a family in the presence of Martha and Shirley. Juliette assesses that someone else is present in the silo after her rope, which she tries to use to bridge the gap between the two levels, has been cut off. Finally, after much struggle, Juliette reaches in front of a vault in the server room, where she comes across a seemingly deranged, isolated man, who has locked himself inside the vault and threatens Juliette with her life if she dares to break inside it.
After connecting with Juliette, Solo reveals himself to be the shadow of IT chief Russell Conroy. Providing Juliette food, he states that there are fifty silos in existence, and mentions a resident of Silo 17, Ron Tucker, who ignited the rebellion by going outside, the result of which is pretty evident to Juliette. Fearing the same fate will befall her people in Silo 18, Juliette decides to warn them and tries to convince Solo to help her return. Solo suggests repurposing a firefighter’s suit to use it as a replacement for her damaged suit, and after much pleading by Juliette, agrees to venture outside the vault. Juliette needs to dive inside the flooded area to access the suit, and even though Solo helps her in that regard by joining hands to make a harmonium-air-pumped breathing device, he wants Juliette to turn off the pump, which has been slowly flooding the silo. However, Juliette is more concerned about her own silo for the time being and prioritizes assembling the necessary stuff to make the return trip. Trust issues surface when Juliette finds out Solo is not the man he claims to be, and upon being confronted about it, he reacts hysterically. After Juliette collapses after being afflicted with severe infection, Solo tends to her, but gives her an ultimatum of fixing the pump if she intends to return to her silo. Juliette begrudgingly does so by diving underwater, and almost dies when her air supply and harness are cut off. While she initially suspects Solo to be responsible, it turns out that a group of teenage survivors, which includes Audrey, Rick, Hope, and Benny, tried to kill her from the moment she set foot inside. Seeing her being able to reach Solo and convince him to get outside the vault, they tried to have her killed, abducted, and tortured Solo to force him to open the vault for supplies, to no avail. Juliette approaches Solo and shows him kindness, which finally convinces the broken soul to open up about his true identity – he is Jimmy Conroy, son of former IT chief Russell Conroy. Russell had asked his son never to get outside the vault to ensure his protection, and poor Jimmy had to witness his father’s tragic demise as rebel leader; the sheriff of the silo killed him right outside the vault. The guilt of not being able to save his father broke Jimmy’s mind, and he resorted to the coping mechanism of believing himself to be his shadow, Solo, who could have done a better job of protecting him. Juliette’s empathy helps Jimmy to see reason and open up the vault for the teenage survivors, who are in dire need of food and shelter, as one of them, Audrey, is pregnant with Rick’s child. The teenagers held a grudge against Solo, who had apparently killed Audrey’s parents, but as it turns out, his actions were motivated by self-defense instead of any true malice. As Juliette makes the final preparations to leave, Jimmy finds a note mentioning Safeguard Protocol and remembers the warnings about an existing failsafe mechanism in the silos. He warns Juliette that the Safeguard Protocol ensures that all ten thousand denizens of any silo can be instantaneously killed by poisonous gas pumped through specialized pipes connecting all the silos. He mentions that his parents were able to stop that from happening before the rebellion by putting a cap over the pipe, which helps Juliette to get an idea of how to fend off the crisis.
Rebellion in Silo 18: Kyle and Bernard Learn the TruthMeanwhile, back in Silo 18, things threaten to spiral out of control after Juliette is seen to have moved beyond the crater without cleaning, and to keep control over the situation, Bernard alters the narrative by trying to portray Juliette as a heroic martyr whose apparent survival was possible thanks to IT’s ingenuity. Taking the stooge Mayor Meadows by his side, Bernard joins the IT and the judiciary to frame the mechanical division, and unrest continues to grow under an authoritarian crackdown. Meadows offers her assistance in exchange for having an opportunity to go outside like Juliette, and Bernard falsely assures her that he will let that happen. Sims’ ambition prompts him to plot an impeachment against Meadows to drive a wedge between her and Bernard’s alliance, and using this excuse, Bernard ends up poisoning Meadows to death. Before her passing, Meadows revealed that the hard drive Juliette had stolen, which Bernard had destroyed, contained former IT chief Salvador Quinn’s encrypted letters sent to his wife, upon reading that Meadows had left her job as Bernard’s Shadow decades ago. Bernard brings Kyle, Juliette’s accomplice, who was sentenced to serve in the mines, and commands him to recover the data from the destroyed hard drive and crack the encrypted data. In the meantime, Bernard and Sims frame the mechanical division for Meadows’ murder. The raiders, now led by Rick Amundsen, manage to capture Walker’s ex-wife, Clara, while rebel leaders like Knox and Shirley manage to escape with Sims’ wife, Camille’s help, who has been secretly helping the resistance time and again. Sim is assigned to the role of new judge, much to his dismay, and he grows distant from Bernard for keeping him out of the loop. While it was previously believed that the century-old rebellion was the handiwork of the mechanical, it turns out Quinn orchestrated that, wiped records, and tried to erase memories of the denizens of the silo to keep a terrible secret from ever getting surfaced.
Billings’ distrust of Bernard prompts him to join hands with the deep downers, while Pete Nichols decides to take a page from his daughter, Juliette’s book, and begin to defy the authoritarian rule, eventually joining the rebels. As Kyle struggles to bypass Quinn’s cryptic letters, Bernard decides to make him his Shadow, and allows him to access the Legacy, aka the archive of all knowledge, which predates the creation of silos. Searching through the Legacy’s advanced computer system, Kyle realizes he will need Quinn’s version of Pact, aka the silo rulebook, to crack the code, and he tracks down his descendants, who reveal Meadows had taken the Pact years ago. Moving into Meadows’ quarters, Kyle finds Quinn’s Pact and learns his role in erasing the history, blaming mechanical and an ominous message about the true intention of the founders to keep the denizens trapped inside the silos. Quinn’s message causes Kyle to become disillusioned, realize how his cowardice followed the precepts created by the ones in power, and he decides to hand Quinn’s Pact to his mother to keep it away from Bernard. Kyle follows Quinn’s message and reaches the lowest level to find a tunnel, which leads him to a giant metal door. A computerized voice, later revealed to be of an all-powerful AI, Algorithm, greets Kyle and warns him not to reveal anything about their interaction to anyone, or else Safeguard Protocol will be activated. It turns out, before Kyle, George Wilkins – Juliette’s deceased boyfriend, and Meadows had found Algorithm – this explains Wilkins’ mysterious demise and Meadows’ complete disenchantment throughout the latter portion of her life.
Silo 18 Averts its Neighbour’s FateIn the meantime, the impending conflict between rebels and Bernard’s forces nearly threatens complete collapse, as Martha tricks Bernard into having the raiders be drawn and remain trapped in the deep. Pete sacrifices himself for the cause of the rebels by manually exploding part of the spiral staircase, making it impossible for the raiders to return to the top. Billings, who further believes in Juliette’s truth about life outside thanks to an artwork from his daughter’s picture book, convinces Sim of the same by showing it and manages to have him join the rebels as well. Before the all-out chaos erupts, Kyle meets with Bernard and secretly reveals the majority of what he has learned. The horrible truth that the founders, Salvador Quinn, were not the noble saviors he imagined them to be, his own life is as insignificant as the people he had murdered, causes Bernard to lose any will to persevere, and he hands the vault keys to Sims to let him have his long-desired wish fulfilled. Sims tries to pry intel from Kyle, to no avail, and brings his family to the vault. The Legacy computer system in the vault, which probably has ties with Algorithm, asks only Camille, Sim’s wife, to remain inside, which hints that she has a major role to play in the greater scheme of things.
A disillusioned, purposeless Bernard believes the silo to.be doomed anyway, and decides to go out on his own terms when Billings tries to convince him to take control of the situation, to no avail. Right at the moment, Juliette is seen returning to Silo 18, and showing a handwritten message on the visor that moving outside is dangerous and denizens shouldn’t attempt to escape. Her return effectively settles down the situation for now. As Juliette tries to re-enter the silo, Bernard, who has dressed in a protective suit, opens the hatch and holds her at gunpoint. He wants to enjoy freedom for once in his life by going outside, and Juliette tries in vain to convince him not to do so. Juliette reveals she too knows about Safeguard, and they notice the main entrance to the silo is getting closed automatically. As both of them attempt to return, the in-built system releases a huge flame upon them – leaving their fate a mystery. Juliette has probably survived thanks to her repurposed fireman’s suit, but the same probably can’t be said for Bernard.
Mystery of the Founders: A Glimpse into the PastThe final moments of the second season finale of “Silo” are set three centuries ago, when global nuclear warfare, which is the probable cause behind the dystopian settings of the present day, was in its infancy. A congressman from Georgia, Daniel, meets his date, Helen, in a diner near the Capitol, Washington DC. Helen, a journalist by profession, reveals the true intention behind the meeting, revealing that she has heard rumors that a nuclear bomb has been dropped by Iran on American soil. Helen wants to know whether the government, or the powerful, shady corporation (probably the founders of Silo), who are in cahoots with Daniel, have thought of any retaliatory arrangements. Daniel, irritated at the questions, leaves without answering, and hands a silk wool duck toy/ PEZ dispenser to Helen, which he had brought as a gift. As the viewers already know, George Wilkins had the same toy with him, which he showed to Juliette, and three centuries later it was deemed to be a banned relic by silo authorities. This also means Helen might have ended up inside silo when things went south, and her descendants might still be inside Silo 18.
