Barisan Nasional (BN) is on course to form the next Johor state government after unofficial results showed the coalition winning at least 49 of the state’s 56 seats — far surpassing the 29-seat simple majority threshold.
UMNO Secretary-General Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, in an update on his Facebook page, announced that the unofficial results were recorded as of 8.06 pm tonight.
BN chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also claimed the coalition had crossed the 40-seat mark, though those figures remain unverified by the Election Commission (EC).
The EC’s first three confirmed unofficial results — Machap, Kukup, and Sedili — all went to BN.
Caretaker Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi retained his Machap seat with 6,509 votes against Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) 2,393.
On the opposition side, Pakatan Harapan (PH) is said to have secured its first win in Bentayan, where incumbent Ng Yak Howe held the seat.
Ex-Menteri Besar Voted OutOne notable upset is that former Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal of Perikatan Nasional (PN) lost the Bukit Kepong seat to BN.
DAP is leading in 7 of the 17 seats it contested — Bentayan, Penggaram, Mengkibol, Stulang, Perling, Skudai, and Senai — while trailing in the remaining 10.
The party held its strongholds in Johor Bahru and key Chinese-majority towns, but failed to make inroads in rural Johor, where BN dominated comfortably.”
Earlier, Ahmad Zahid confirmed that BN would maintain cooperation with the federal Unity Government regardless.
Voter turnout stood at 67.44 per cent — over 1.8 million of the state’s 2.6 million registered voters — as of 5 pm.
Full official results are expected by 10 pm.
