'The Dark' 2026 Ending Explained & Series Recap: Will There Be A Season 2?

The all new ITV crime thriller series, The Dark, justifies its name completely with a bleak tale from the Scottish Highlands, and the grim visual aesthetics to match it. The 6-episode series follows police detective Monica Kennedy, as she investigates a series of murders and murder attempts in the Scottish wilderness, all while a woman from her past keeps showing up, dangerously wanting to befriend her young daughter, Lucy. Overall, The Dark is an absolutely entertaining show for any fans of the crime thriller genre, and while its plot might seem a bit shaky till the end, the series makes up for it through its characters and bleak settings.

What is the series about?

The Dark opens at a cinema theater somewhere in Scotland, where the protagonist, DCI Monica Kennedy, has come with her daughter, Lucy, and mother, Angela, to catch a film. Sometime during the screening, Monica takes a quick washroom break, but when she returns to her seat, she is shocked to find another young woman there, who mockingly welcomes her back. Monica knows this woman, Philly, and they have a shared past, but she is not at all happy to see her at present. The reason for that is clear, as Philly, rather creepily, wants to befriend young Lucy and take her somewhere, and so Monica has to guide her family safely back to her car, before bringing out her tough personality as a police officer. Without any hesitation, she threatens to hurt Philly if she ever tries to make contact with Lucy again. 

The next morning, Monica’s new partner at work, DC Connor Crawford, picks her up and takes her to a new crime scene. The dead body of a young man has been found in a field after electric workers came to the place for repairs. The manner in which the corpse has been completely cleaned and then placed face-down on the ground, with the hands stretched over the head, to make it look like it is praying, immediately suggests some link to the occult. It is also evident that the young man had been killed somewhere else, and was brought to the field to possibly leave a statement. DCI Monica Kennedy is sure that the killer will strike again, given the apparent link to the occult, and that this is only the beginning of a long cat-and-mouse game.

Before Monica’s suspicions are ultimately proven right, when another young man from the town goes missing and is found dead in the forest behind his house, she and Connor start investigating the bizarre murder. With every passing minute, it seems like the case is heavily linked to certain incidents from the past, particularly as the young man is identified as Jason Morgan. A few years back, Jason’s elder brother, Nichol, had mysteriously vanished from the town, and it was Monica who had investigated that case as well. While most clues pointed to Nichol having run away from home, many believed that his stepfather, Barclay Adams, might have done something to the boy. The townsfolk were aware of how Barclay and Nichol despised each other, and so the rumors did not take long to spread. Now, DCI Monica Kennedy leads the investigation into the serial killings, while also being repeatedly haunted by her own past, particularly her old links with a local cult.

Who is the killer?

The serial killer is ultimately revealed to be Kyle Ward, the apparently friendly and helpful principal of the local high school. The shock value in The Dark is heavily based on the very fact that someone as ordinary and lovable as Kyle, who is an intricate part of the local community, happens to be a serial killer prowling for victims after dark. During his final showdown with DCI Monica Kennedy, Kyle himself clarifies why he has been killing people. Apparently it was all because of an urge the man developed after his wife’s passing. Kyle always had a dark and cruel side to him, which made him want to hurt people just for his own pleasure and amusement, but he had kept these urges suppressed in his mind for the longest time. Proper education, a respectable position in society, and a stable personal life encouraged him to keep all these unnatural urges at bay as well, but the normalcy in his life was shattered after the death of his beloved wife.

Kyle was overwhelmed by grief, and struggled hard to cope with the loss, before these depressive feelings made way for even darker realizations. Suddenly, he felt that there was nothing holding him back from exploring his darkest desires anymore, and the realization opened the floodgates for a horribly cruel plan. Kyle decided to lure victims and murder them, simply because he found pleasure and enjoyment in the act of killing, and so he started looking for potential victims. But he did not want to kill just anyone, as he wanted to give a deeper and symbolic coat to the base act of murder, and so he came up with an elaborate setup to justify his acts to himself. Like most other psychopaths, Kyle Ward decided to play God and ‘punish’ those youngsters who he felt had wasted the potential in their lives to be helpful to society. 

Through his act of killing these young men, he also gives them a ‘second chance,’ believing that they will be reborn with the same potential again and get another chance at life. While Kyle begins by killing young men in the town he is not related to, he does not even hesitate to kill his own daughter, Tammy, in the end. Tammy had figured out that something was up with her father, especially after she saw his stash of old keypad phones, and it was a known fact that the killer had been handing out such phones to his victims. It is not like Kyle remains steadfast to his agenda of punishing young men for wasting the potential in their lives to the point of risking his own safety. He is always very vigilant about his own position, concerned about his public image, and fearful of getting caught by the police. This is also intricately linked to the fact that Kyle hides behind a false identity, wearing a mask and committing the murders in dark. He does everything to blend in, posing to be a helpful friend to teenagers with troubled personal lives at times, to then change his victim profile and even his modus operandi just to ensure that the police do not suspect him.

Do the murders have any link to the occult?

The reason that the serial killings are thought to be linked to some occult ritual or practice is that the bodies are left in apparently symbolic fashion, and the killer even goes through the difficult process of cleaning the bodies after murdering them. However, this had only been a part of Kyle Ward’s pretense of being a serial killer with a broader point to prove. Kyle had been leaving the bodies in this manner only to make it look like the work of a cultist. He wore a creepy-looking mask while committing the crimes not only to hide his identity but also because it was like putting on a second personality for him that was different from his real one. These were mere acts put on by the serial killer, who was aware of how insignificant his acts actually were, and wanted to make them seem greater.

On the surface, Kyle claimed to be punishing young men who had failed to reach their potential in life, but in reality, the one thing truly common among all his victims was that they were in vulnerable positions in life. Jason Morgan hailed from a disturbed household, and had been distressed after the disappearance of his elder brother, that too because their parents loved Jason more than Nichol. His second target, Rob Wright, was distraught after his mother had abandoned their family a few months earlier. A later target of his, a young man named Scott MacKay, happens to live a far more luxurious life than the others, because of his family’s wealth, but he struggled to accept that both his parents live away from him for work and that hardly cared about him. 

Kyle takes advantage of these very vulnerabilities, and pretends to be their elder brother, their estranged mother, or their busy father, respectively, just to lure the young men into even more vulnerable situations, so that he can kill them. The way he kills the victims also has an air of convenience to it, for Kyle simply poisons their tea and watches them slowly lose control over their bodies and then die. He is not physically fit enough to try a more violent or direct style of killing, and so he resorts to poison. He marks his targets by giving them old keypad phones, to be used as burner phones, texts them on these devices, luring them in for the kill, and then poisons them to death. With no connection to any occult practices so far, Kyle finally leaves the corpses in such a manner to confuse the police and essentially protect himself.

Why is Philly killed?

The murder of Philly changes the course of the serial killings, because she does not fit the victim profile at all. After having attacked only young men before, Kyle now suddenly picks up Philly after she escapes from the hospital and kills her. He then leaves her body in front of Monica’s house, which makes it evident that the murder is a direct challenge to her. Amongst other motivations, Kyle had been killing also to mess around with the police, inviting them to a game to catch him, by leaving unnecessarily cryptic clues at the crime scene, like the black stones and the dead body of a rabbit. Therefore, killing an old acquaintance of Monica and leaving her body in front of the detective’s house is an act of instigation, mocking the police for not having been able to catch him yet. But there is another reason for the murder, for Kyle had also grown desperate in recent times, after having failed to take the lives of his last few targets. Although Owen MacLennan had died after being admitted to a hospital for a few days, and it was technically Kyle’s doing, he had obviously missed out on the satisfaction of watching the young man die in front of his eyes. Yet, he had already experienced the cruel joy of taking a life, and therefore Kyle started looking for easy targets when he decided on Philly. Once he murders her, Kyle abandons his original pattern completely, and targets the social worker, Michael Bach. Not only does Kyle want to seek pleasure by killing Michael, but self-preservation is also a motive now, as he wants to make the social worker appear to be the serial killer who had been haunting the town.

How is Nichol Morgan connected to the serial killings?

Around midway through the series, Nichol Morgan suddenly showed up at his parents’ house, a few days after the tragic murder of his younger brother. Nichol had indeed run away a few years back, because of his animosity with his stepfather, Barclay Adams. At the time, Nichol felt that Barclay did not want him around the house, and loved only Jason, because of which he felt angry and betrayed. This put him in an emotionally vulnerable situation, and therefore made him an easy target for Kyle Ward, who did not try to kill him, but instead made him an accomplice. During the serial killings, Kyle sent burner phones to each of his victims to lure them out, and he had gotten hold of these phones because of his position as a worker at the high school’s outreach center. The original purpose of the prepaid phones was to be handed out to clients in vulnerable situations so that they could reach out to the center in a time of emergency. But Kyle had been misusing the phones, and as Nichol Morgan himself admits to Monica a few weeks after Kyle has been brought down, it was he who had been helping the murderer hand out the phones to his targets.

What ultimately happens to the perpetrators?

During the final showdown, Kyle initially believes that he has outsmarted DCI Monica Kennedy, and he attempts to kill her too, by poisoning her tea at Michael Bach’s house. However, Monica had already figured out who the killer was, and also his modus operandi, and so she switches the tea cups when Kyle is distracted, which means that the killer ends up drinking his own poisonous concoction. There is no way to arrest Kyle Ward and charge him for his crimes, as he passes away from the effect of the poison, but at least the serial killings are brought to an end, and this is a success for the police department. Although Nichol and his mother had moved away from the town, the guilt of having handed his own brother the phone that had led to his death kept him traumatized. Therefore, he surrenders himself to Monica when she comes looking for him, and confesses to having helped Kyle kill and attack the victims. This means that Nichol will be the only one punished by the law in this case, although it seems unlikely that his punishment will be too harsh.

Does the last scene tease a sequel?

With the murder case finally solved and settled, Monica returns her attention to her personal life, and celebrates Christmas with her mother and daughter. But among the greetings cards that her family has received is one addressed to young Lucy, which sends shivers down Monica’s spine. The card is an instant reminder of the protagonist’s past, as she had once been a member of a local cult called Burning Light. During the many years she spent in the cult, Monica got together with the leader, and he is the biological father of Lucy. It was Monica who had brought Philly to the cult, and the leader got intimate with the younger woman as well, making her pregnant. Eventually, Monica was brought out of the cult with the support and love of her mother, but Philly stayed on for a few more years. In recent times, the cult had expelled Philly for some reason, but had kept her child with them. It was because of this that Philly had desperately tried to befriend Lucy and take her to the cult, meaning to her father, because she felt that doing so would lead to her own child being freed from the cult. 

In The Dark’s ending, it becomes evident that the leader of Burning Light himself wanted to reconnect with his daughter, and the card that he sends for Christmas is basically a warning for Monica, threateningly reminding her that she can’t do anything to keep him away from the girl. But she would surely do everything in her power to ensure that Lucy never gets to meet her devilish father, meaning that if the show returns with a 2nd season, DCI Monica Kennedy will directly face-off against the Burning Light cult and attempt to bring them down.
