Paramount’s Lioness Cast And Characters Guide

The representation of female characters in Paramount+’s “Lioness” has drawn divisive opinions from fans and critics alike since the very first season. On one hand, the series features strong female characters as leads who showcase their distinctive flair in the domain of espionage, political intrigue and field combat – holding on their own in predominantly male dominated fields. On the other hand, extreme suffering, exploitation, compromising morals and ethics seems to be the inevitable cost of securing their position in the same pedestal as men, a regressive choice to say the least. This issue remains unchanged in the second season as well, and the downgrade of the narrative has also aggravated the overall situation.

Joe McNamara Played By Zoe Saldana

After beginning her acting career with “Law and Order” in the late 90s, Zoe Saldana gained global recognition with her performance  as Nyota Uhura in “Star Trek” movies, as Neytiri in “Avatar” movie series, and as Gamora in Marvel Cinematic Universe. Aside from these, Saldana has acted in movies like “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl”, “Death at a Funeral”, “Emilia Perez” to name a few. In the second season of “Lioness”, she reprises the role of Joe McNamara, chief of the Lioness programme who struggles to meet the extreme demands of her profession while trying to be present for her family. Joe’s absence and lack of attention left a major impact on her family in the first season, hence as the new season begins she is seen to be trying her best to shoulder the responsibilities of a wife and mother to make up for past actions. However, as Congresswoman Hernandez’s kidnapping and family murder unravels a dreadful geopolitical conspiracy, Joe is dragged back to her former pedestal to lead the Lioness programme and find a suitable killing machine to be moulded into an undercover agent. On this occasion, Joe is tested time and time again as situations aggravate her struggle to balance between personal and professional life. Failing to save the victims of Los Tigres human trafficking ring turned out to be the biggest moral crisis Joe has ever faced, and it would have taken her arc to new heights that hadn’t the narrative completely ignored the human cost of the crisis later.

Cruz Manuelos Played Laysla De Oliveira

Actor Laysla De Oliveira found acclaim with her performance in series like “Locke And Key”, “The Gifted” and movies like “Guest of Honour”, “In the Tall Grass”, “Code 8” etc. In “Lioness”, she plays the role of Cruz Manuelos, ex-Marine turned Sergeant First Class in SFOD who was trained by Joe to become a Lioness. Having experience of what it takes to bear with the extremes of psychological pressure, Cruz is forced to rejoin the programme as Joe’s shadow and Serafina’s mentor. Despite having brief screentime, Laysla’s performance as Cruz perfectly captured her growth through the two seasons. Whereas in the first season Cruz was a volatile, temperamental and emotional individual, at present Cruz has accepted her reality and has grown to be a calculative, sharp, tough as nails soldier who can become an even better leader than Joe when the need arises. Hoping to see more of Cruz in the upcoming season, in greater capacity as well given Joe plans to retire by handing over all her responsibilities to her protégé.

Josefina Carrillo Played by Genesis Rodriguez

Starting her acting career with telenovelas, Genesis Rodriguez has acted in series like “Entourage”, “Time after Time”, “The Fugitive”, “The Umbrella Academy” and movies like “Hours”, “Delirium”, “Centigrade” etc. In the second season of “Lioness” she plays the role of Captain Josefina Carrillo, niece of Los Tigres cartel leader, Alvaro Carrillo. A dedicated soldier who has taken enough lives to be deemed suitable as Lioness programme’s undercover killing machine, Josefina finds her life in disarray after being forced to become part of the operation which pits her against her family.  The expression of the struggle of staying loyal to her country while coming to terms with the truth about her family makes Serafina’s character interesting, even though she doesn’t actually do anything as a Lioness agent whatsoever. Cruz’s chemistry with Serafina was rushed quite a bit as the narrative wasted too much time on random plotlines, and hopefully Serafina stays a part of the main cast in the third season as well.

Miscellaneous Cast

Apart from the main characters, the absolutely stacked supporting cast of “Lioness” season 2 were exceptional in the roles they were given. Nicole Kidman reprised her role as Kaitlyn Meade, Joe’s supervisor in Lioness programme and one of the head honchos of CIA. Michael Kelly reprises his role as Byron Westfield, CIA Deputy Director of Operations. Morgan Freeman returns as State of the Secretary Edward Mullins, and Dave Annable also reprises his role as Joe’s husband, Dr. Neal McNamara. Kirk Acevedo plays the role of DEA Special Agent Raymond Gutierrez, series creator/writer Taylor Sheridan himself played a cameo as Delta Force Sergeant Major, Cody Spears, Joe’s friend and fellow comrade.
