SM Sains Kuching clinches gold award, fifth place at national winds orchestra festival

KUCHING, Aug 16: Sekolah Menengah Sains Kuching (SAINSKU) made Sarawak proud when its student wind orchestra, SCATZ Winds, secured fifth place and a Gold Award at the 24th National Sekolah Berasrama Penuh (SBP) Winds Orchestra Festival 2026, held from Aug 10 to 13 at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Serdang, Selangor.

According to a press release, the achievement marks a significant milestone for SCATZ Winds, particularly following its silver finish last year.

“This year, the young musicians stepped onto the national stage with greater determination and returned with the Gold Award, placing them among the top five wind orchestra ensembles nationwide.

“Behind the achievement lies a journey defined by perseverance, discipline and sacrifice. Working with instruments that are nearly 20 years old, alongside limitations in equipment and financial resources, SCATZ Winds faced challenges that could easily have discouraged a young ensemble,” said the press release.

It added that the school’s achievements represent not merely a ranking, but the determination of young people who chose to challenge themselves and strive for excellence despite limitations.

The school attributed its success to the collective support of its leadership, teachers, coaches, parents, and alums.

“Their continued involvement reflects the enduring bond between SAINSKU and its alumni, those who once stood as members of SCATZ Winds are now returning to help guide the next generation.

“Their contribution serves as an inspiring example of giving back to one’s alma mater and strengthening the legacy of the school’s music community,” it said.

At the same time, it also thanked parents who supported their children financially and emotionally, encouraged them throughout the demanding preparation period, travelled to support practices and competition days, and welcomed the students home with flower bouquets and banners at Kuching International Airport.

“This achievement belongs to every student who persevered through rehearsal, every teacher and coach who guided them, every parent who stood behind them, and every alumnus who chose to give back.

“SCATZ Winds may be young, but their determination has proven that they can stand among the best. More than a Gold Award and a fifth-place finish, this achievement is a testament to grit, excellence, teamwork and the enduring strength of the SAINSKU community.” — DayakDaily
