'Insidious: Out Of The Further' Ending Explained: Is There A Mid-Credits Scene?

[Spoiler Alert] Insidious: Out of the Further’s ending was all about Gemma using her Courier powers to thwart Cyrus Lam. How did things come to that? Some time in the ‘70s (it’s a guess based on what looks like a date on the coroner’s report), a self-proclaimed psychic named Cyrus was killing people and then claiming to the deceased individuals’ loved ones that he could talk to the dead or serve as a bridge between the dead and the living. He quickly amassed a cult following, but when word of this reached the police, they raided his temple to arrest him. But things went sideways and Cyrus was shot to death. Cyrus reserved a spot for himself in the Further by promising all the ghosts and demons present in there that he’d take them to the mortal realm one day. I suppose he was more truthful to the dead than he was to the living because he knew that the consequences of lying to the dead would be a complete erasure of his soul from that purgatorial place, while lying to the living would be next to nothing. In the ‘90s, Cyrus got a whiff of Ingrid because she had the power to not only astral project into the Further, but also transport physical stuff from the Further to the mortal realm and vice versa. So, Cyrus began haunting Ingrid, wearing her down bit by bit, so that she’d eventually submit and allow Cyrus to “hitchhike” with her astral projection into the mortal realm. Ingrid didn’t allow that to happen as she killed herself before Cyrus could exploit her powers; since Cyrus was spiritually linked to Ingrid when she died by suicide, he got trapped in her memories. It seemed like Cyrus was done for, but then 20 years later, the last three human acolytes of Cyrus (Lester, Patty, and Edna) started prepping Gemma (Ingrid’s daughter) to serve as the bridge that Cyrus and his demon army would use to cross into the mortal realm. How well did that plan go? Let’s find out.

Gemma Learnt About Cyrus’ Masterplan

It was unclear for how long the acolytes of Cyrus were trying to gain access to Gemma, but let’s assume that when they moved into the neighborhood where Gemma lived, killed the Sullivans (who lived across the street), and took over their house, they officially began invading Gemma’s private space; and I mean that in the literal sense. They would break into Gemma’s house every night, send her into the Further, and then chip away at her mental strength from the inside. Gemma’s relationship with her house was complicated because, firstly, that’s where she had grown up, secondly, that’s where she had seen Ingrid kill herself, and thirdly, by bringing up Maya in there, she wanted to replace the bad memories associated with that place with good ones. Cyrus and the acolytes knew that regardless of how horrible things got for Gemma, she would not leave that house because it’d mean that she had admitted defeat; they saw Gemma’s determination to fix things where everything had gone wrong as her greatest weakness. To a certain extent, they were right, but at the same time they weren’t aware (and maybe Gemma wasn’t aware either) of how strong Gemma’s resolve actually was. Anyway, when Lester attacked Gemma at her workplace, and sent her to the Further so that Cyrus could do a test run on her, Elise saved her and told her to meet her at Clare’s place. When Gemma met up with Clare (who kind of served as Elise’s conduit), she got the whole lowdown about how she was a Courier (like her mother) and that Cyrus was planning to use her to travel to the mortal realm (and bring his dead friends along as well). Elise (via Clare) brought up her tryst with the Lamberts, how they closed the door on the Lipstick Demon, and how that act led to the opening of another door which brought Cyrus into the Further. Gemma shared all this info with her boyfriend, Nick, and Nick advised her to simply move to a different location. Gemma underscored the fact that it wasn’t the house that was the problem, it was her. So, no matter where she went, Cyrus and the acolytes would find her and exploit her. The only viable solution that she could think of was convincing Nick to stay the night at her place and catch the Acolytes red-handed when they tried to get into her mind.

Gemma Broke Into The Sullivans’ House

With the acolytes arrested, Gemma thought that maybe Cyrus wouldn’t be able to gain access to her soul. However, what she didn’t take into account was that the acolytes had weakened her so much that they didn’t need to always physically break into her house to do Cyrus’ bidding; they could do the same from the comfort of their house (or the Sullivans’ house) by taking a strong sedative and accessing her via the Further (Gemma knew about the sedative but, as pointed out by Nick, they couldn’t go around stealing old people’s oxygen tanks just to prove that they had filled it with sedatives). Therefore, when Gemma went to sleep, even though Nick was on lookout duty, the acolytes managed to grab hold of her and used her to send one of the demons from the Further into the mortal realm. Something went wrong in that process though because the demon got sawed in half during the transfer and it died. That said, it proved that Gemma was capable of bringing the undead into the mortal realm and Nick had physical proof that all her ramblings about demons and the Further were not a figment of her imagination. Gemma and Nick packed the body into the freezer and, the following day, while Nick drew the acolytes out of the Sullivans’ house to question them, Gemma snuck into the Sullivan household to destroy the gas tank filled with sedatives. Because if they didn’t have the sedatives, they would not be able to enter the Further, and if they could not enter the Further, it would not be able to weaken her for Cyrus’ sake. Yeah, that plan kind of backfired because Gemma accidentally slipped into the Further (probably because the sedative leaked from the tank she was destroying) and Cyrus tried to send a demon into the mortal realm. I said “kind of” because when Gemma fought back and accidentally sent the TV in the house into the Further, she sort of figured out how she could use her power to send things into that realm. The effort she put into getting out of the Further though had caused her fly through the air and slam into the floorboards really hard. That prompted Nick to stop questioning the acolytes and rush to Gemma’s rescue. As Nick was dragging Gemma out of the house, they saw that the crawlspace underneath the floor was packed with sedative tanks. Since Gemma was already breaking and entering, she and Nick couldn’t stay and destroy all those tanks, and they had to leave. But instead of waiting around for things to get worse, Gemma, Nick, and Clare began chalking up the plan to defeat Cyrus and the acolytes once and for all. Here’s what they intended to do: Gemma would go into the Further with Elise with the aim of leading Cyrus through the big red door from which he had arrived into the Further. But since the acolytes would be guarding the door, Nick was tasked with breaking into the Sullivans’ house and taking them off the sedatives so that they would be unable to block the door. Elise and Gemma would then allow Cyrus to chase them through whatever laid on the other side of that door. Once Cyrus would lose track of them, Clare would guide Gemma out of there. She’d close the door behind her, exit the Further, and Bob’s your uncle. Did things go according to plan? Nope.

Elise Thwarted Cyrus

Since the situation in the household was about to get intense, Gemma sent Maya to her other neighbor, Liz. Gemma had been acting like Ingrid ever since her “night terrors” began (she was literally saying the same words that Ingrid did) and Gemma could see the same fear in Maya’s eyes that she experienced when she saw Ingrid spiralling out. The big difference was that Gemma had help that Ingrid didn’t, but Gemma didn’t want to burden Maya with that information; she thought that once the threat of Cyrus was over, she’d sit her down, and do a detailed study of the whole ordeal. Well, that was a mistake. You see, while Gemma, Nick, Clare, and Elise were busy carrying out their operation, Lester was waiting (in the best hiding spot in the Sullivan household) for Maya to fall asleep. Why? Because the ability of being a Courier was inherited. The acolytes had both Gemma and Maya in their radar so that if they failed to use Gemma to transfer Cyrus and the demons into the mortal realm, they could fall back on Maya. Moreover, Maya was much younger than Gemma; Gemma would die after a certain amount of demon transfers, while Maya would be able to hold out much longer because of her age. So, yeah, in the time it took for Nick to find Lester’s sedated body, and Gemma to understand that Ingrid had sacrificed herself to lock Cyrus in her memories, Lester sent Maya into the Further and Cyrus used Maya to enter the mortal realm. Cyrus killed Liz, causing Maya to take Radar (Liz’s dog) and run back to her house. Nick abandoned Lester’s sedated body to save Maya; Cyrus knocked out Nick, captured Maya, and then began using her to bring the demons from the Further into the mortal realm. It was probably one of the most sickening moments in the Insidious franchise because that’s a literal girl, with no control of her body, being drained of her life force so that a bunch of evil, dead souls could feel alive again. I mean, it’s very obvious the kind of exploitation that Jacob Chase and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick were trying to point onwards. You can take it on face value and just treat it as a regular horror movie scene but, yeah, I think this whole sequence is purposefully disgusting to underscore the movie’s dark themes and earn the title of “insidious.” Given how Gemma and Elise were a little distracted by the former’s reunion with Ingrid, who had been trapped in the memory realm of the Further all these decades, their realization that Cyrus was exploiting Maya came a little too late. Elise told Gemma to leave the Further and save her daughter, while she focused on sending Ingrid into the afterlife (so that she could finally rest in peace) and bringing Lester out of his hiding spot. Gemma re-entered her body, told Clare to get out of the house to help Nick, and confronted Cyrus and the demons. Elise possessed Lester’s body, entered Gemma’s house, and while Cyrus was busy goading about how he had one-upped Gemma, she puppeteered Lester’s body to carry Maya out of the house and give her to Nick.

Gemma Sent Cyrus Into The Further

In Out of the Further’s ending, Cyrus punished the acolytes for failing him and as he was about to walk out of the house to get to Maya, Gemma put herself between Cyrus and the door. Maya broke free of Nick’s clutches and tried to open the door, but Gemma telepathically told Maya to let go of the doorknob so that she could transport the whole house, including Cyrus and the demons, into the Further. I think when Gemma said “let go,” she was also telling herself to let go of the house that she was so attached to. Yes, it was true that her bloodline was cursed with being a Courier, and that was the main reason why she, her mother, and her daughter were being targeted by demons. But since she kept marinating in all the dark memories that that house held–instead of, you know, cleaning it up and properly starting anew, which was something that Nick and Maya kept telling her to do–she was keeping herself and her daughter from moving forward. Hence, Gemma realized that she had no choice but to chuck the entire house into the Further. It was an immense feat (which had been foreshadowed earlier with Gemma sending the TV into the Further) and Gemma did pull it off, thereby undoing all the work that Cyrus had done because he and his demons got trapped in the Further along with that house. All that was left of the buildings was its foundations. Gemma had painted over the mailbox to hide Ingrid’s name probably after her death, but the ordeal had caused the paint to wear off, thereby putting Gemma, Ingrid, and Maya’s name side by side. That served as a visual reminder that Gemma’s preconceived notions about Ingrid had been washed away. She had lived her life under the impression that Ingrid had ignored her and then killed herself before her just to traumatize her. However, her trip through the memory lane in the Further helped her realize that she was fighting Cyrus all that while. Ingrid’s sacrifice was what prompted Gemma to be selfless and “let go” of that house. If the mailbox is any indication, I don’t think Gemma will be moving out of that neighborhood though. She, along with Nick, Clare and Maya, will build a new house from scratch, fill it with new memories, and work together on strengthening their mind so that no Cyrus or cult-ish acolytes could exploit them ever again.

Cyrus was punished by the very demons that he had freed (which included everybody’s favorite, the Lipstick Demon), albeit momentarily. And then, in the mid-credits scene of Insidious: Out of the Further, Cyrus was put in a dentist’s chair, the door to the Further was locked, and then he was operated upon by the demon dentist. I don’t think that scene had any deep meaning. It was a fun callback to the scene where Cyrus had prevented the demon dentist from using Gemma to travel into the mortal realm. I guess he was holding a grudge ever since he was denied the chance to be alive again; since Cyrus had failed miserably, and had been considerably weakened by the angry demons, he knew that was his opportunity to get even, and he took it. Of course Cyrus wasn’t dead; demons can’t die, they can only be locked away. Will Cyrus try to get a hold of Gemma and Maya again? No, I think he’s done for. But, like Elise said earlier, when you close one door in the Further, another one opens up. So, based on that statement, it’s only a matter of time that some other demonic entity like Cyrus tries to exploit Gemma and Maya’s Courier powers to wreak havoc in the mortal realm. They will surely be aware of Cyrus’ failings and will try to avoid the mistakes that he made. As mentioned earlier, I’m sure Gemma and Maya won’t bring down their defenses in this lifetime or the next. They will try to enjoy their life in the best way they can, but since they possess such a great power, they will also ensure that it doesn’t get wielded again by a demon. Anyway, these are my thoughts on Insidious: Out of the Further. If you have any opinions on the same, feel free to share them in the comments section below.
