iPhone Ultra is coming: Three new features will be worth the wait

The iPhone Ultra will be unveiled very soon at the just-confirmed September 9 event. Apple’s foldable will debut seven years after competing products, but three key iPhone Ultra features should make the wait worth it. Here’s what’s coming.

#1: Virtually crease-free display

Samsung’s first foldable smartphone launched in 2019, a full seven years before the iPhone Ultra will debut. But rumors have indicated for a while that one of Apple’s goals in building a foldable is to eliminate any visible crease from the display.

Inner displays with visible creases have long been a design compromise in the foldable category. But all signs point to Apple achieving its goal of a virtually crease-free display.

Per leakers, it’s possible that at certain angles with specific lighting conditions, a very faint crease might be visible. But for the most part, we’re expecting an inner display that largely looks entirely crease-free when unfolded.

#2: Ultra-thin without compromising battery life or performance

Foldable smartphones can get too bulky if they’re not thin enough. But making them thin can lead to compromises in battery life, performance, and thermals.

However, rumors indicate that last year’s iPhone Air was in several ways a stepping stone toward achieving a foldable iPhone that’s ultra-thin while offering solid battery and performance.

iPhone Ultra isn’t expected to have quite as long of battery life as iPhone 18 Pro Max. But its physical battery specs combined with efficiency gains from A20 Pro and C2 chips should deliver good enough battery nonetheless.

And the A20 Pro, combined with a vapor chamber, will enable impressive performance too.

#3: Durable hinge with tech over 15 years in making

The iPhone Ultra’s hinge is rumored to use liquid metal. That’s a technology first licensed by the company over 15 years ago.

Plenty of predictions in the early 2010s highlighted liquid metal’s potential in helping the iPhone get thinner and lighter. There was even reference in 2010 to the tech aiding Apple’s work on a folding phone.

Now we might finally see liquid metal be put to good use. And reporting indicates it will help Apple achieve a hinge that’s durable and smooth, standing the test of time and heavy use.

Apple certainly could have built a foldable iPhone sooner. But it sounds like the time is right for a foldable with the level of quality that the iPhone deserves.
