'Pardons Board decision does not undermine our fight against corruption' – PM Anwar

THE Pardons Board's decision on Datuk Seri Najib Razak's sentence does not undermine the government's principle of taking firm action against all cases of corruption and abuse of power.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stressed that the government remains committed to the rule of law, and this decision does not imply that the nation must yield to corruption or the abuse of power.

He added that all corruption cases, including those involving the former Prime Minister that are still ongoing, must proceed in accordance with the law.

“As Prime Minister, my duty is to provide advice regarding legal implications, national stability, and the principles of the rule of law, as well as to heed the comprehensive and detailed advice and guidance provided by the Attorney General.

“However, ultimately, the Constitution vests absolute power in the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” he said.

"I wish to emphasize that the principle of the rule of law and our decision to take action on all corruption cases remains unshaken.

“This does not mean the nation must bow to the practices of plunderers and corruption," he said after performing Friday prayers at Surau Nur Perdana, Precinct 10, today.

Earlier, the Pardons Board granted Najib a conditional pardon allowing him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028.

Under the conditional pardon, Najib will serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028, subject to him paying a fine of RM50 million.

He must comply with all conditions imposed under the conditional pardon. – September 18, 2026
