'Mobland' Season 2 Episode 1 Recap & Ending Explained: Who Is Frankie?

MobLand Season 2 episode 1 starts off with Conrad and Maeve out of jail and visiting Green Park Dogs, a greyhound racing stadium, with Paul and his nephew, Fergus. Maeve seems to be interested in betting on Ballycare Moon, while Conrad says that they should be focused on the meeting with Gakbu Ruzgar. During their argument, Maeve makes a joke about Conrad being too professional and elitist, which causes Fergus to chuckle. As Maeve goes into the lounge area, Conrad hangs back with Fergus and Paul and tells Paul that if Fergus wants to keep both of his testicles intact, he should refrain from laughing at his boss. After that, the three of them head to the lounge area as well, and Conrad is surprised to see that Gakbu isn’t there; he has sent his brother, Luca, to talk to Conrad. And Luca has come with what Conrad describes as a whole football team, which is just an unnecessary show of strength for a simple heroin-related business transaction. As if that’s not worrisome already, Luca reveals that, while Gakbu had initially made a deal with Conrad, he is currently in business with Kevin, who has actually received the first shipment as well, and has assured Gakbu that Conrad won’t come between them. Which means that this meeting between the Harrigans and the Ruzgars isn’t a courtesy meeting; it’s an ambush. As Luca starts to reciprocate Conrad’s insults, Conrad goes over the edge, takes both of Paul’s pistols, tells Paul to take Fergus’ firearm, and signals Maeve (who is busy yapping about how she’s about to win a lot of money by rigging the bets in favor of Ballycare Moon) to pull out her piece. Once everyone’s ready, the Harrigans take down all the Ruzgars (Conrad does get shot in the shoulder) and state that nobody should make the mistake of messing with them again. What happens next? Let’s find out.

Harry Learns About The Ruzgar Incident

Jan and Harry are seen sitting before their therapist, Emily, and giving her a brief recap of everything that has happened in their lives in the first season, with things climaxing with Jan accidentally stabbing Harry. Emily wonders if Gina knows about it or not; Harry says that he told her that he got hurt by falling on some railings, and Jan reveals that she told the truth to Gina. That apparently prompted Gina to leave the Da Souza household for good, and it seems like neither Harry nor Jan know where she is. She has left a letter for Jan though, where she has advised her mother to leave Harry. Additionally, she has written that she wishes that Jan had actually finished what she had started and killed Harry. As Harry is processing this revelation, he gets a call from Paul about the incident at the Green Park Dogs. Harry leaves the therapy session and goes to the scene of the crime to advise Finch, his inside man in the police department, how to remove all evidence of what the Harrigans have done. While that’s happening, we are subtly introduced to DCI Kavanagh, who speaks to Dean, the bartender, and the staff of Green Park Dogs regarding the shootout. As Harry heads to the Cotswolds, we get a very brief look at Bella doing cocaine in the washroom and then heading into a meeting with a legal firm that will represent the Harrigans, given how O’Hara died last season. That conversation is interrupted by Kevin, who informs Bella about Conrad killing Luca and most of the Ruzgar family, which means that the Ruzgars will be looking to retaliate. Hence, Bella says that she is coming back home, and Conrad advises her to take the cab instead of her car so that, in case she is being followed, she can lose her tail. At the Cotswolds, while Maeve removes the bullet from Conrad’s shoulder, Harry has a chat with Paul about the incident; Paul is shocked to learn that Harry had no idea about the meeting between the Harrigans and the Ruzgars, and he goes on an entire rant about how the Harrigans are becoming more and more chaotic by the second. Harry doesn’t respond; he just heads into the house to talk to Conrad and Maeve as Paul addresses Fergus’ concerns about expecting the unexpected when it comes to the Harrigans.

Harry Warns Conrad About Kat 

After giving Conrad the lowdown on everything that he has done in order to protect the Harrigans from being put away for killing the Ruzgars at Green Park Dogs, Harry asks him why he wasn’t informed of the meeting with Gakbu (which turned into a meeting with Luca). Maeve joins the conversation and reveals that she is the one who told Conrad to keep the meeting with Gakbu under the wraps, because she’s aware of the fact that Kevin is trying to steal Conrad’s clients from him. Evidently, that didn’t work out, and if the Harrigans weren’t wearing several layers of plot armor, I’m sure Conrad, Maeve, Paul, and Fergus would have bitten the dust. Even the single bullet wound that Conrad sustained could have been avoided if he would have told Harry, because Harry would have either communicated with Kevin or Gakbu regarding that matter, and then he would have informed Conrad that Gakbu was meeting with Kevin, thereby preventing the unsavory situation with Luca. Conrad and Maeve don’t have any smart retorts for that. So, Harry uses this opportunity to recap the events of the first season (this is the third time, by the way, if you count the recap that appears before the episode plays) to illustrate the fact that the Harrigans are in a death spiral, which has made it very easy for their enemies to take them apart piece by piece. Harry says that the “taking them apart piece by piece” part of the narrative is already in motion, and the evidence of that lies in Gakbu’s decision to break off his deal with Conrad and go to Kevin. No matter how you cut it, it doesn’t make sense for Gakbu to shake hands with Kevin, because what Conrad was offering was much, much more lucrative than what Kevin gave him. Which means that Gakbu ignored the financial loss that he was going to incur by going to Kevin because he knew that defying Conrad would drive a wedge between the father and the son. And Harry believes that this wasn’t a decision that Gakbu made on his own; he believes that Gakbu is following Kat’s orders.

Conrad Orders Harry To Kill Gakbu 

Harry had made a deal with Kat, where he’d join her gang if she saved Seraphina and Brendan from Jaime’s clutches. Kat managed to save Seraphina, but Brendan was chainsawed to death by the time Kat got on the phone with Jaime. And Harry chose to stay with the Harrigans instead of honoring his deal with Kat, thereby guaranteeing that, one day or the other, her axe would fall on him, his family, and the Harrigans. Conrad has been anticipating Kat’s move, but it seems like when he was ambushed by the Ruzgars, he forgot all about Kat and chose to start a war with the Ruzgars, who are supposed to be their allies! Maeve doesn’t have an explanation for that; so she starts talking about donkeys and ponies. What she means to say is that it’s high time that Harry chooses between Kevin and Conrad. He can save only one of them from Kat’s wrath, and she thinks that Harry should pick Conrad and sacrifice Kevin. On that note, Maeve heads to her bedroom (she actually hides right outside the living room to eavesdrop on Harry and Conrad’s conversation). Conrad asks Harry what he should do to survive Kat’s onslaught, and Harry advises him to speak to Kevin, hash things out, close ranks, and tackle the storm that is Kat as a unit. Conrad says that he won’t do that, because Kevin betrayed him; I suppose Conrad is referring to Kevin’s decision to leave his father in prison so that he can sit on the throne of North London. Conrad orders Harry to “take care” of Gakbu for not honoring his deal; Harry agrees to do it, but he warns Conrad that he is making a big mistake by doing that. On his way out of the Cotswolds, Harry calls up Zosia to see if the Harrigans’ narrative when it comes to the shootout is still airtight, and she assures him that everything is in order. Hence, Harry gives Zosia a different objective: finding Gina. Now, while telling Conrad about the measures that he and his crew have taken to safeguard the Harrigans from the police, Harry said that the only weak spot is the staff at Green Park Dogs. I don’t know why Harry didn’t make sure they were bribed or threatened–later on, it’s revealed that they were warned and that’s it–but, as predicted by him, Dean comes forward to tell Kavanagh that the ones responsible for the death at Green Park Dogs are the Harrigans. Finch relays this information to Harry, who asks Finch for Dean’s address so that he can pay him a visit.

Maeve Meets Eddie 

Maeve decides to head to London all by herself, but since the war with the Ruzgars is on, Conrad advises her to take Paul with her. Since Paul is not around, Conrad orders Fergus to go with Maeve. However, right after driving through the gates of the Harrigan household, Maeve tells Fergus to get out of the car, because she doesn’t want him around her. As she drives away, Zosia and Dog, who are stationed near the Harrigan household, inform Harry that Maeve is on the move; Harry tells them to follow her. After Harry hangs up on his associates, Jan walks into the room and tells him to check his WhatsApp, which he does, and he finds out that Jan has sent him a divorce application form. Harry thinks that he can discuss his way through this situation, but Jan puts her foot down and states that the divorce is the only direction in which they can take their marriage. As Harry is coming up with a response, his phone starts ringing again and, as per usual, he prioritizes his duty over his family. Harry goes to Dean’s apartment, kidnaps him, takes him to a secluded location, and advises him to change the official statement that he gave to the police. Harry wants Dean to tell the police that he was intimidated and coerced by Gakbu into blaming the Harrigans for the shootout. If he does that, Dean will never see Harry or the Harrigans again; if he fails at this simple task, he is going to die. Without missing a beat, Dean rushes to the police station and tells Kavanagh that it was Gakbu, not the Harrigans, that spilled all that blood there. Kavanagh knows that Dean is lying, but she can’t do much about it. While all this is going on, Zosia and Dog observe Maeve meeting Eddie (he supposedly went AWOL after the attack at the safehouse in the woods in Season 1) at a diner to get a cut of the money that her “grandson” has earned by extorting YouTubers. Eddie has a sizable crew now (probably something that Maeve has arranged for him so that he can make a name for himself out in the field), and Gina is a part of it. Even though Gina despises her dad, she is doing the exact same thing that Harry does: being a fixer for a Harrigan.

Harry Warns Kevin About Kat 

Eddie fancies Gina, but he also appreciates her professionalism. When he underscores that fact to Maeve, as if to get her blessing regarding Gina’s recruitment into his crew (which includes Roger and Rodway), Maeve tells Eddie to get rid of her and increase his “grandmother’s” cut of the pay. As Maeve and Eddie depart from the diner, Zosia notifies Harry that Eddie has surfaced; Harry tells Zosia and Dog to follow Eddie, because if they find Eddie, they will find Gina. Harry goes off to the shipping yard to meet Kevin. After some chitchat about their respective spouses, Harry tells Kevin to explain himself in regards to the Gakbu deal. As Kevin starts ranting about Conrad starting a war with Gakbu, Harry tells Kevin the same thing he told Conrad: Gakbu is doing what he is doing because Kat is using him to weaken the Harrigans; and they are falling right into her trap because of their ego. Kevin doesn’t buy that theory, not because it isn’t sound, but because he is quite miffed at the fact that, despite being his childhood friend, Harry has chosen to officially side with Conrad in this civil war. Harry says that the time for petty squabbles is over, because Kat is way, way more dangerous than Richie. He points out that Kat has $8 trillion in cash, and the world’s biggest nuclear arsenal; which means that Kat has some solid or tepid connections to the US government and the CIA. Gakbu isn’t the threat here, Kat is. As Harry departs from Kevin’s shipping yard, the focus of the episode shifts to Kat, who is being sworn in as the United States Ambassador to the Court of St. James’s, which is the official royal court of the British monarchy. This shows that Kat is not only making inroads into the UK through gangsters; she is going right to the top to drive her fangs into the country. The Harrigans are barely running North London, and if they continue doing so, as Harry has repeatedly said, they will be eaten alive by Kat.

Seraphina And Tattersall Meet Kat

At the aforementioned seminar, Kat cites Joseph Kennedy Sr., who held the same position in real life that Kat currently does, to make a promise about being a robust bridge between the two nations. Present at the audience of that seminar, along with many other people, are Seraphina and Tattersall. After the event is over, Seraphina meets up with Kat at the Delaunay to have a chat about dethroning Conrad. Seraphina believes that Harry wants her on the throne and that’s why he asked for Kat’s help to save her from Jaime’s wrath. Kat agrees to bankroll Seraphina campaign if, after sitting on the proverbial throne, she gives half of the Harrigan revenue to her for five years; Seraphina brings that down to four. Kat gives Seraphina a phone number and tells her to call it number whenever she gets a call from anyone associated with the Harrigans and relay whatever information she has received from them. Seraphina is a little hesitant, but she eventually agrees to do Kat’s bidding. Once Seraphina has left the restaurant, Tattersall joins Kat at her table. After appreciating her speech, Tattersall talks about Kennedy building a “war chest” in the UK, and using that money to finance his family’s political ambitions. Kennedy apparently “broke bread” with every gangster and mob boss in England to fill his coffers. Tattersall is aware of the fact that Kat has ties to Boston mobsters, which means that she is well-equipped to deal with London-based gangsters. However, her ambassadorial status puts her in a spotlight that wasn’t exactly present during Kennedy’s time (because the news media wasn’t what it is today, and there was no social media back then), which is why she can’t directly deal with said gangsters. Tattersall recommends that she hire a paladin to “ride into battle” on her behalf. Kat assumes that Tattersall is talking about himself, but he corrects Kat by saying he and Gakbu (yes, Tattersall knows that Kat has tried to break the Harrigans with Gakbu’s help) are too old to play this game; what she needs is some young blood who will conquer London and put it at Kat’s feet, and the person that’s on his mind is Frankie.

Frankie Is Kat’s Paladin

In the ending of episode 1, we see Harry killing Gakbu and the Ruzgars, and also confirming that Gakbu was in fact working on Kat’s orders. As he is heading out of the Ruzgar household, he gets a call from Zosia, who tells him that they have found “her,” and by “her,” I suppose she is talking about Gina, who is probably at Eddie’s crib. In addition to all that, we get our first glimpse at Frankie as Tattersall comes to meet him at his house. What does this all mean? The Ruzgars are dead, that’s for sure. Since Gina has been found, I think Harry is going to make some kind of attempt at winning back her trust and then use her to convince Jan to cancel the divorce plans. Will that work? I hope not, because Harry is a man of many talents, but he isn’t capable of being a family man. I know he thinks it’s his duty to save Gina from Eddie’s influence, but I think she is exactly where she wants to be. If Harry tries to pry Gina out of Eddie’s hands, she will become all the more adamant about being with Eddie. So, he should just leave her alone and let her come to her senses, if that’s something that’s meant to happen in the first place. As for Kat, it’s evident that she is going to use two methods to take down the Harrigans. Seraphina is going to supply her confidential information and she’s going to use that to silently weaken the Harrigans’ foundations. The Harrigans are going to see Frankie coming at them because he looks loud and obnoxious. It’s unclear how influential he is, but it looks like he is wealthy; which means that he has an army that will be formidable enough to take on the Harrigans. We see kids roaming around in his house, which is an early indicator that he is vulnerable and can possibly be threatened. Or maybe Frankie is ruthless enough to sacrifice anyone, including those children, if it means that he can one-up the Harrigans and serve them on a platter to Kat. With all that said, while the Harrigans will be busy figuring out Frankie, Seraphina is probably going to hollow them out, thereby allowing Kat to topple them with a flick of her finger.
