Selampit Bridge project faces 94-day setback amid funding, supply constraints

LUNDU, Sept 25: The Selampit Bridge Project has been delayed by approximately 94 days, with physical progress reaching only 41.09 per cent against a scheduled target of 79.05 per cent, prompting intensified efforts to address project constraints and keep construction on track ahead of its revised completion date of Jan 3, 2027.

According to Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news, the matter was highlighted during a special meeting and site visit to the project on Thursday (Sept 24), attended by Opar assemblyman Billy Sujang, to assess the current status of the project and review measures under its recovery plan.

During the project briefing, it was also highlighted that the actual financial progress stood at 46.48 per cent compared to the target of 80.64 per cent, reflecting the challenges affecting overall implementation.

Among the issues identified were the phased disbursement of allocations from the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) to the Public Works Department (JKR), which has impacted payment processes and the contractor’s cash flow.

The briefing also revealed that payment for Interim Payment Certificate (IPC) No. 18, amounting to RM757,344.81, is currently being processed.

Several challenges involving the procurement and delivery of construction materials were also highlighted, including permanent casings, spun piles, materials for girder works, PC strands and ducting. The issues are being addressed to ensure construction activities can continue without further disruption.

Project stakeholders also reviewed the mobilisation of resources, participation of subcontractors, payments to suppliers, workforce productivity, as well as site management and supervision in an effort to strengthen the implementation of the project’s catch-up plan.

In addition, rising diesel prices and logistical challenges in transporting construction materials have been identified as contributing factors affecting progress and are being taken into consideration as part of ongoing mitigation efforts.

The special meeting and site visit served as a platform for relevant agencies and stakeholders to coordinate solutions, address identified bottlenecks and enhance monitoring mechanisms to accelerate construction momentum.

Also present were political secretary to the Premier of Sarawak Niponi Undek and Lundu District officer Zulkarnain Ismail.

Once completed, the Selampit Bridge is expected to significantly improve connectivity and ease travel for residents in Selampit, Kendaie and surrounding areas, strengthening transportation links and supporting local socio-economic development. — DayakDaily
