Idiots Movie Ending Explained And Full Story

Whatever you do in life, if you’re an adult responsible for a bunch of kids, don’t make the mistake of showing them Lars von Trier’s classic “Antichrist.” This becomes more unforgivable when you work for a church, and that’s the situation O’Shea Jackson Jr finds himself in the opening scene of Macon Blair’s “Idiots,” although I do prefer the original, non PG-13 title they premiered with at Sundance, to be honest. Blair’s film is a much-needed breath of fresh air, delivering the kind of dark comedy we could always use more of, with simple yet edgy humour despite the uncomplicated plot. Dave Franco and Mason Thames are both fantastic, essentially playing the same character with varying degrees of unhinged, while Thames’ rich, spoiled-brat act genuinely makes you want to punch him in the face throughout the film. There are a few wonderful little cameos from Kiernan Shipka, Nicholas Braun, and Peter Dinklage; all of them are almost unrecognizable in the characters they play.

Spoilers Ahead

What happens in the film?

Davis gets fired from his job at church for taking the local kids to see “Antichrist,” and not leaving even after seeing Frank and Beans. Meanwhile, Mark gets fired from his job at the call centre after not even pretending to do his job, smoking and playing games instead. His boss loves him still, but even he can’t save Mark’s behind anymore. Thankfully for Mark, his roommate tells him about a well paying transport gig he can apply for, and there, he sees Davis crying in the driveway. Mark meets India, the woman he needs to meet for the job, and she tells Mark that he needs to transport a troubled teenager to a rehab centre. But India is extremely disappointed when she gets to know that Davis doesn’t own his truck anymore, so she asks Mark to use his own car for the job, after it goes through a thorough wash. Now, the job doesn’t sound too bad, right? Well, I thought so too, but the teenager in question is Sheridan, a brat born with a golden spoon in his mouth. While Davis is doing the paperwork with Sheridan’s family attorney, Celeste, which basically states that Mark and Davis are responsible for Sheridan’s safety and well-being until he’s admitted to rehab, Sheridan makes a run for it and tries to escape. Poor Mark twists his ankle trying to catch the little brat, and now Davis has to drive the car while they take Sheridan away.

What delays Mark and Davis’ journey?

Davis tries to make small talk with Sheridan, asking what his drug of choice is, since that’s the first question people in rehab are going to ask him. Sheridan reluctantly says weed, and Davis immediately calls it the devil’s grass, which isn’t even the right terminology for marijuana; it’s devil’s lettuce, as devil’s grass is just an invasive bush. Mark is very disappointed to learn that Sheridan is going to rehab for weed, so Sheridan immediately says that he’s done acid as well. Instead of backing off, Mark says that he popped acid like popcorn back in high school, which hurts Sheridan’s rich boy ego. So, Sheridan asks Mark if he’s ever done coke off a hooker’s behind, or smoked opium out of a scuba mask on a Poole Chaffee yacht, and both Mark and I have no idea how to even comprehend the latter. Davis gets mad at Mark for encouraging this conversation, since he’s now all committed to being a good Christian and a responsible mentor to Sheridan. When the gang stops at a diner to grab a bite, Sheridan goes to the washroom, and instead of going with him immediately, Davis and Mark spend some more time bickering with each other. Mark finally goes to the washroom and freaks out seeing the window wide open, but when he sees Sheridan coming out of the stall, he’s relieved. However, after leaving the diner, they see that someone has slashed one of the car tires, and Mark doesn’t carry a spare with him. Having no other choice, they send the car to a garage and check into a motel for the night.

How does Sheridan escape?

Sheridan notices the different sorts of drugs Mark is carrying in his man pouch, and Mark has gotten quite high right after checking in. You can imagine a person having a psychedelic experience won’t be thrilled to hear the Christian televangelist program Davis is listening to on the TV. When Mark asks Davis to change the channel, Davis gets offended and starts arguing with Mark for insulting his religion, and the argument escalates for no good reason. Sheridan uses this opportunity to go to the bathroom with Mark’s drug pouch and spike a couple of soda cans with an absurd amount of drugs. He then asks the men to calm down and offers them the spiked drinks, with the drug taking effect almost immediately after they each take a single sip. Davis doesn’t know what’s happening to him, so he goes outside for a walk, while Mark is getting higher and higher with each sip. Sheridan sees an advertisement in a magazine for a private dance escort, and manipulates Mark into booking a performer by claiming that he’s a virgin and feels horrible about it. Mark goes out to the ATM to get some cash, and we see a couple of middle aged men recognising Sheridan and discussing how legendary the boy is. An escort named Irina comes to the motel, and Davis sees her while wondering about if his existence is real or not. But Irina’s dance comes to an abrupt halt when all the drugs finally catch up with Mark, and he suddenly unleashes a full blown explosion of diarrhoea right there on the chair. She gets grossed out and wants to leave, but Sheridan asks her how much she’ll charge to sleep with him. When Irina refuses, he convinces her to let him kiss her neck once, but the psychotic kid bites her neck and slams her head against the wall. After Irina is knocked out and Mark lies unconscious, still sitting on the mess he has made, Sheridan leaves the room with Irina’s bag and money. Davis can’t find his way back to the room, as he’s also high as a kite, the motel owner helps him get back. But poor Davis had no idea what he was walking into, and thanks to the kind motel owner, paramedics arrive on time to take care of Mark and Irina.

How does Irina help the boys capture Sheridan?

After Mark gains some control over himself, he realizes what a horrible mistake it was to trust Sheridan, and vows to take him down to drag that brat to rehab. Sheridan also stole Irina’s bag, which had all her earnings of the day, so she decides to help the men catch Sheridan. Irina takes them to her place, where her grandmother, Bodha, is stunned to see Mark wearing nothing but a bathrobe. The two men find out that Irina is actually a singer, and she’s pretty incredible at it, but has to do the job she does to provide for herself and Bodha. It takes a good night’s sleep for Mark and Davis to be functional again, since the amount of drugs they had inside them was outrageous. The next morning, Mark does some social media sleuthing to discover the menace Sheridan is. From peeing on people’s cars, to assaulting strangers, to telling a judge to gargle his marbles, this kid has done it all. His unhinged behaviour has made him a sort of internet celebrity, where screwed up people actually support his nonchalant and aggressive demeanor. But the worst thing that Sheridan has done is set a homeless man on fire; and of course, his rich father has managed to bail him out of that too. Now Mark knows what kind of a person they’re dealing with, and I mention only Mark’s name because Davis is still the naive Christian who still doesn’t understand how dangerous this kid could be. Worst of all, they have no option but to find the kid, since they’re legally responsible for transporting him to safety.

Irina, Mark, Davis, and Bodha pull up to the motel to abduct Sheridan, and Davis takes the responsibility of distracting the motel owner. But the innocent Samaritan doesn’t know how to get the owner angry enough to chase him, he just says ‘your mama,’ which does work on the equally innocent man he’s trying to annoy. Since Sheridan has Irina’s phone, Mark calls her number to figure out which room he’s in, and by the time Sheridan wakes up, one of the middle aged men he partied with opens the door, allowing Mark and Irina to barge into the room. Sheridan doesn’t know how to react, and Mark throws some sort of white powder on his face to blind him momentarily. Irina jumps on the little punk, ties his hands, and slaps him multiple times while screaming what a horrible mistake he made by biting and robbing her. Mark is equipped with a fat iron chain, and he slaps one of the older fellas right across the face with it. As the two of them drive Sheridan away, the rest of the men start chasing after them in their boxers, but obviously, they can’t catch up with Bodha driving the car like she’s Sebastian Vettel.

Who helps Sheridan run away once again?

After Irina gets some of her money back, she calls it a day and bids the men farewell, as their car is fixed and they can be on their way now. The mechanic tells Mark that he found a steak knife in the slashed tire, so it’s not hard to figure out that Sheridan did sneak out of the diner earlier to sabotage them. However, though Mark and Davis think they’ve finally got him under control, they don’t realise how big of a sociopath this kid is. Sheridan has no remorse for setting the homeless man on fire, believing it was the best thing that ever happened to him, given how generously his daddy compensated him. The two of them also didn’t realize that Sheridan has had his phone all this time, and he’s been tweeting his live location, asking people to come rescue him from a couple of pedophiles who’ve kidnapped him, claiming the savior will be rewarded five million dollars. By the time Mark notices the tweets and dumps Sheridan’s phone out of the car, they’ve entered a stretch of road with no cell reception, and Davis decides to stop the car and help an old couple who are struggling with changing a tire. Despite Mark repeatedly saying how dangerous it is to stop the car, Davis has to be the overcompensating good guy and help the couple, and by the time he’s done changing the tire, a cargo van approaches them. Two unhinged men and a girl walk out of the van, all armed with guns, and they immediately capture Mark and Davis. The goons in question are Koko, the leader of the gang (Peter Dinklage: the Goat), Joe aka Pricka Bush Da Werewoof (Nicholas Braun), and Crystal. They come from the same family, and Joe is a completely wacky character who is a huge fan of Sheridan, so much so that his rap is inspired by him. They take Mark and Davis out into the middle of the woods, and the two men think Sheridan himself is going to shoot them. Thankfully, they don’t actually shoot them, and just leave them hanging out in the woods, since they steal Mark’s car. Koko and co take Sheridan to their house, and Crystal mentions that Koko’s wife, Alyssa, will be mad at him for carrying out this mission. However, Sheridan is in deep trouble when he can’t pay the family the five million he promised in the tweet, so they capture him and leave him in a room alone with Joe aka Pricka Bush Da Werewoof. Mark and Davis walk a long way before a weird but kind factory worker whose face is covered with grease offers them a lift, and the two men spot Koko’s house, since they’ve parked Mark’s car on their driveway. Captive Sheridan now has to withstand Joe’s music video, which he produced himself, but he makes the mistake of saying he likes it. Joe decides to show Sheridan his alter ego, the Werewoof, transforming into it by putting on a genuinely gross-looking mask and whatnot. He then sniffs Sheridan and whispers into his ear like a human wolf, which is enough to make the unhinged internet celebrity who prides himself on his toughness cry like a baby.

Do Mark and Davis actually manage to complete their job?

Davis decides to sneak into Koko’s house, but Mark knows that these people are armed and dangerous, so he decides he’d rather just walk away and face the legal consequences of losing Sheridan instead of losing his life. But the good Christian Davis actually manages to sneak in and grab Joe’s gun while he’s busy scaring Sheridan, and he frees the boy who put him through so much crap. As Sheridan and Davis try to make it out of the house, Crystal knocks Davis out with a punch that would put Tyson Fury to shame. Now these guys have two hostages, and Koko keeps trying to call Sheridan’s billionaire dad for a ransom, but this poor kidnapper is constantly being greeted by a voicemail. Meanwhile, Mark starts to walk away from the house, limping horribly, but still trying his best to stay upright. By the mother of all coincidences, he manages to find someone willing to give him a lift, and it turns out to be Alyssa, Koko’s wife, whom he both fears and respects. Mark also feels guilty for leaving Davis alone, but he’s shocked to see Alyssa pulling up to the same house his partner just sneaked into. While Alyssa scolds Koko for kidnapping Sheridan and Davis, Mark uses his brain just in the right time to go into the house and acquire his car keys. The whole family starts bickering, and Mark decides to threaten them with a taxidermied hen, prompting Alyssa to kick him in the jewels. Davis throws a plate at Koko’s head, hitting him right on target, and the pain causes Koko to accidentally pull the trigger and shoot himself in the foot. This fresh mishap allows our weirdos to escape this madhouse, and even though Crystal tries to catch up, Davis saves himself from getting sliced open by an axe.

Davis and Mark finally reach the rehab centre, in one piece, with Sheridan safe and sound as well. But as they walk out of the car to complete the handover, the man Sheridan set on fire shows up with a gun. The poor old guy has probably been planning revenge for a long time, but his aim is horrible, so instead of Sheridan, the bullet he fires hit Mark right below his right eye. It looks like Mark should be dead, but thanks to them being in a medical facility, paramedics get him to the hospital on time to save his life. As Davis is finishing up the paperwork after this huge mess, he looks at Sheridan, who’s pretending to be an innocent patient to the staff of the rehab, but he’s still the same menace, and his winking at Davis just proves he hasn’t changed a bit. Despite the fact that his actions caused pain and disrupted so many lives, the rich kid doesn’t feel an ounce of guilt or shame, and I think this is an extremely realistic take on how this world works. The top one percent do know that they’re entitled to do whatever they wish to do, and even their kids have the same audacity to hurt people without worrying about any consequences. Thankfully, Mark survives this job without going blind or getting killed, and for a moment, he tells Davis that he’s accepted Jesus, which is not significant, because he’s more thrilled about the fact that he’s a local hero who helped save Sheridan by taking a bullet himself. In the end, Davis is off to another job, and hopefully this time, the poor guy will have an easier ride.
