How Alessandro Michele Reimagines the Valentino Rockstud Spike

With new proportions and intricate treatments, the Valentino Garavani Rockstud Spike reveals a more expressive side under Alessandro Michele.

What makes a Valentino piece instantly iconic? Sometimes it is a colour, sometimes a silhouette, and often, a stud. Over the past decade, the House has introduced a new set of signatures, from Pink PP to the Locò bag, while continuing to evolve its studded codes. Now comes the latest interpretation: the new Valentino Garavani Rockstud Spike.

A stud may seem like a small detail, but at Valentino, it has become its own language. The Rockstud first entered the brand’s vocabulary more than a decade ago, turning what could have been a seemingly simple piece of hardware into one of its defining signatures. The latest Rockstud Spike continues that story, with Alessandro Michele looking beyond the hardware itself.

Arriving in an elongated silhouette, the new Rockstud Spike retains its platinum-finish studs, each meticulously applied by hand, underscoring the refined savoir-faire behind the design. But this time, the quilting steals the scene. Its recognisable rhombus pattern becomes a canvas for two very different interpretations, shifting the focus beyond its distinctive hardware.

The first takes a softer turn. Against black nappa leather, floral and butterfly embroideries are interspersed with a nine-dot motif embedded within the rhombus quilting. The butterfly, a recurring symbol in Michele’s creative universe and Valentino’s archives, brings a sense of transformation and freedom to the structured silhouette, adding a touch of movement to its precise geometry.

The second interpretation is decidedly more graphic. Crafted in glossy precious leather, contrasting rhombus-shaped panels are joined with precise zigzag stitching, recalling the Maison’s harlequin-inspired pattern. Set against the familiar silhouette of the Rockstud Spike, the geometric treatment feels almost kaleidoscopic, giving the bag a sharper, more expressive character.
