Reporting Live is a 2026 Hindi crime thriller film streaming on Netflix that intends to go down the dark and realistic route, but struggles with the plot as well as its execution. An investigative journalist’s efforts to bring down the sand mafia operating at a village, which is the main plot in the film, could have been presented in a better and more intense manner. The central characters and the overall performances of most of the actors are still adequate and make the film watchable. Here’s a brief list of all the important characters in Reporting Live, and the actors who have portrayed the roles.
Parineeti Chopra as Sandhya YadavIndian actress Parineeti Chopra stars as the protagonist, Sandhya Yadav, a passionate journalist who believes her job to be to dig up the truth about developing situations and report them to the people of the country. She is obviously used to the unfriendly treatment that journalists are usually given by the police during intense situations, but is also aware of how to deal with such behavior and get her job done. Sandhya has high morals and high expectations from her fellow citizens, and so she is understandably shocked and in disbelief whenever she hears of people having been murdered for simply standing up for the truth. She is also very driven in covering all sides of any story that she is working on, which often leads to her getting exclusive perspectives, to the delight of the news channel she works at.
In her personal life, Sandhya is happily single, and enjoys the loving attention of her pet dog, who is her only companion back home. Like all women in Indian society, she has to handle requests, urges, or sometimes orders, to get married during every phone call with her family members. But Sandhya is determined to first build a successful career in journalism, achieve her goals in the field, and only then think of marriage and family. Eventually, Sandhya Yadav seems to get the chance she has been looking for, when she discovers the involvement of the sand mafia in an incident that she goes to report on. Unfortunately, Parineeti Chopra is just as bad in the film as she was in the recent Netflix series Shaq: Trust No One. The actress is known for her roles in Ladies vs. Ricky Bahl, Ishaqzaade, and Hasee Toh Phasee.
Deven Bhojani as Vinod SharmaIndian actor, director, and producer Deven Bhojani plays Vinod Sharma, a colleague and close friend of Sandhya. A video journalist who is irked whenever the archaic term ‘cameraman’ is used to describe him at the end of live transmissions, Vinod is a constant presence beside Sandhya. Together, the reporter and video journalist cover every story they are assigned, and they also have a strong bond outside work. Vinod is just as determined, honest, and passionate about his work as the protagonist, but there are moments when he still hesitates to jump into risky situations. This is entirely because Vinod is a family man, with a young daughter to think of as well. His relationship with Sandhya extends to the fact that they always return home together, and the reporter also responsibly keeps his hipflask with her, as Vinod wants to keep his drinking habit a secret from his wife. Deven Bhojani is up to the task as Vinod Sharma, and the actor is known for his roles in Sarabhai V/S Sarabhai, Agneepath and Dunki.
Amol Palekar as Shiva KakaVeteran Indian actor and director Amol Palekar appears as Shiva Kaka, an elderly man living in the village of Visargaon. Sandhya visits Visargaon to cover the news of a tragic accident, in which a bridge collapsed and killed 14 schoolchildren. It is Shiva Kaka who tries to demand a fair investigation into the incident during a meeting with the local politician later that day, and gets hounded by the other villagers, who are clearly trying to protect the real perpetrators. When Sandhya and Vinod then approach him for some more information, the old man refuses to cooperate at first, because of his bitter experiences with journalists in the past. But it is eventually he who leads them to the real story involving the sand mafia’s vast operations in the area. Having himself been affected by the cruel grip of the illegal sand mining operation, Shiva Kaka is determined to see an end to it. Amol Palekar is best known for his role in Gol Maal, and for the films he’s directed like Kairee, Daayraa, and Bangarwadi.
Adil Hussain as Vidur DuttIndian actor and producer Adil Hussain plays Vidur Dutt, the head of the editorial team at the news channel that Sandhya and Vinod work at, Azaad Bharti. A renowned and experienced journalist, Vidur has always been extremely dedicated to his job and to journalistic integrity, right from his college days. He was the one who started Azaad Bharti, with the intention of delivering objective and unbiased news to the country. Although he has had to modify his ways after the corporate takeover of his news channel, Vidur still believes in honesty and transparency, and there are moments when he regrets enforcing a corporate structure at the workplace. His personal life is not explored in the film, but Vidur has a genuine fondness for both Sandhya and Vinod because of their hardworking and determined nature. A highly skilled actor, Adil Hussain is best known for his roles in Life of Pi, English Vinglish, and What Will People Say, and he has also recently appeared in the Netflix shows Operation Safed Sagar and Musafir Café.
Shekhar Suman as ShyamIndian TV presenter and actor Shekhar Suman appears as Shyam, the corporate boss who takes all the executive decisions at Azaad Bharti. After having bought the news channel from Vidur a few years back, Shyam now has a rather tight grip over the content that is aired and its overall stance on every matter. As expected, Shyam has to often play the tough role of keeping every side in check, especially when Vidur feels passionately about some news piece, but they need to wait it out until the facts are verified and the leads are confirmed. He has a close professional relationship with Karthik, the lead anchor of the channel. But while Shyam does work as the bridge between the editorial team and the board of directors of the channel, his intentions are sometimes confusing, which suggests that he might have some secrets of his own. Shekhar Suman has been working in the Indian film and television industry for decades, and is best known for his appearances in The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, Dekh Bhai Dekh, and Heeramandi.
Nassar as R VelrajVeteran Indian actor Nassar appears as R Velraj, a strong-handed capitalist who believes that certain sections of society have to make sacrifices for the overall betterment of the nation. He is the founder and chairman of the Golden Sky Group, a private infrastructure company that has been embroiled in a controversy recently after its attempts to vacate the site of a historic fishing village in Mumbai. Aside from his identity as the boss of one of the wealthiest companies in the country, Velraj is also a passionate wildlife photographer, with his special interest being taking photos of migratory birds. He is dedicated enough to visit Visargaon every year during the time of the sandpiper’s migration in order to watch them and also photograph them. Nassar has acted in countless films in multiple regional industries in India, and is best known for Anniyan, Anbe Sivam, and Baahubali: The Beginning.
Saswata Chatterjee as JPIndian actor Saswata Chatterjee appears as JP, another experienced journalist working at Azaad Bharti. Despite having started the news channel together with Vidur, who was his college batchmate, JP is pushed out at the beginning of the film, upon grounds of them having to downsize the company. However, JP is certain that downsizing is only a lame excuse, and the real reason is something completely different. He had been working on an investigative piece regarding the administrative corruption in a development plan called the Grand Highway project. According to him, Shyam was not very impressed by his investigation, and this is the reason behind his sacking. Although he appears only at certain parts of the film, JP goes on to play an important part in the plot. Mainly an actor in the Bengali film industry, Saswata Chatterjee has appeared in multiple Hindi films and shows as well, with Kahaani, The Night Manager, Jagga Jasoos and Tooth Pari being some of them.
