Hideo Kojima has shared photos of himself outside Sony City, Sony’s corporate headquarters in Tokyo, sparking fresh speculation about his relationship with the company. On 13 October 2026 he posted the images on social media with the brief caption “Visited Sony City.” In one widely shared shot he stands in a black blazer and a Joy Division T-shirt beneath the illuminated Sony logo—an outfit choice that immediately prompted comparisons to Johnny Silverhand’s assault on Arasaka Tower in Cyberpunk 2077.
The visit arrives only weeks after a significant shift in his publishing arrangements. Earlier in 2026 Sony withdrew from funding and publishing Physint, the ambitious action-espionage title Kojima has described as a spiritual successor to Metal Gear. The decision, conveyed during a Zoom call in June, left Kojima concerned for the future of his independent studio. Kojima Productions subsequently secured a deal with Xbox to publish Physint. The same partner is already supporting his experimental horror project OD, which features performances from Sophia Lillis and Hunter Schafer and is progressing on schedule after earlier delays linked to the SAG-AFTRA strike.
In interviews following the Physint change, Kojima insisted there was no ill will toward Sony. He noted a relationship stretching back roughly 30 years that includes Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding, and said he remains a fan of the company. Observers have pointed out that Kojima Productions’ Tokyo office is close to Sony City, so the appearance could simply have been a friendly drop-in. Others interpret the deliberate social-media post as a public signal that bridges have not been burned and that future collaboration remains possible. No new Sony project has been confirmed.
Kojima’s current slate is now centred on Xbox. OD continues to be described by its creator as a new form of media that deliberately tests the limits of fear, and he has said he intends to keep details sparse until closer to release. Physint is further along in pre-production, with story, concept work, casting, and technology experiments under way; Bill Skarsgård has been named as the lead. The partnership also extends to potential film and television adaptations.
The photos therefore sit at the intersection of two realities: a long-standing personal and professional affinity for Sony, and a practical pivot to Xbox for the studio’s biggest upcoming titles. Whether the visit was purely social, a quiet reassurance to fans, or the start of something new remains unclear. What is clear is that Kojima continues to move freely between the major platform holders while keeping both of his high-profile projects alive.
