BYD Flash Charging spotted in action at Denza Balakong, official launch happening soon?

BYD’s Flash Charging technology is one step closer to going live in Malaysia. A video taken at Denza Balakong shows that the ultra-fast DC charger has been powered up and tested with a Denza Z9 GT.

The video provides an early glimpse of BYD’s Flash Charging capabilities, which promise to charge compatible EVs from 10% to 70% in just five minutes.

With the chargers already installed and testing underway, it appears that BYD Flash Charging could go live for the public very soon, subject to regulatory approval.

Denza Z9 GT gains 7% charge in just 41 seconds

In the video uploaded on TikTok, a Denza Z9 GT was plugged into the BYD Flash Charger with a starting State of Charge (SoC) of 5.93%. At this point, the charging display indicated nine minutes remaining.

After just 41 seconds, the battery level had increased to 12.97%. This represents an increase of 7.04% along with an indicated range top up of 49km in less than a minute.

While this is only a brief charging demonstration, it provides an early look at BYD’s Flash Charging performance in Malaysia.

BYD Flash Charging coming soon to Denza showrooms in Malaysia

As reported previously, BYD Malaysia is deploying its 1,500kW Flash Charging stations at selected Denza showrooms nationwide.

So far, we have spotted Flash Charging installations at several locations, including Denza Glenmarie, Denza Balakong and Denza KL North.

Beyond its showrooms, BYD is also looking to expand Flash Charging infrastructure along major intercity routes.

Earlier this month, BYD Malaysia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Gentari to explore the wider deployment of Flash Charging infrastructure in Malaysia. The collaboration aims to bring ultra-fast charging beyond urban locations and showrooms, including intercity corridors.

BYD Flash Charging: 10% to 70% in just five minutes

BYD’s Flash Charging technology is capable of delivering a maximum charging output of 1,500kW, significantly higher than the typical 180kW to 400kW DC chargers currently available in Malaysia.

According to BYD, compatible EVs equipped with its second-generation Blade Battery technology can charge from 10% to 70% in just five minutes. Meanwhile, a charge from 10% to 97% takes just nine minutes.

These charging speeds are currently supported by BYD’s latest EVs with 2nd generation Blade Battery, which is designed to handle extremely high charging power.

At the moment, the Denza Z9 GT is the only model in Malaysia that supports these headline charging speeds.

To deliver such high power output, the Flash Charging stations are backed by BESS, which can help supplement the electricity supply and reduce the instantaneous demand on the grid.

Despite being developed by BYD, its Flash Charging stations will not be exclusive to BYD and Denza vehicles.

As confirmed by BYD Malaysia previously, the chargers will also be accessible to EVs from other brands.

The Flash Charging hardware supports up to 1,000V and 1,500A, allowing it to accommodate EVs with different battery architectures, including 400V and 800V systems.

However, this doesn’t mean every EV can charge at 1,500kW. The actual charging speed will depend on the vehicle’s maximum supported DC charging power, battery condition and charging characteristics.
