Another Downpour, Another Round of Flash Floods Across Klang Valley
13 小时前
Klang Valley’s familiar cycle of heavy rain, flooded roads, and traffic disruption returned on Wednesday, October 28, as a two-hour thunderstorm triggered flash floods in several locations. For motorists, the consequences were immediate. For local authorities, the latest incidents renewed questions about drainage capacity and the effectiveness of measures to prevent recurring floods.
In Puchong Utama, rising water engulfed Jalan Taman Tasik Prima, leaving a car stranded in ankle-deep floodwater. Footage shared on social media showed a man pushing the vehicle along the submerged road.
Further south, flooding was reported near Cyber 10 along Persiaran Sepang in Cyberjaya, towards Mulia Residences. Vehicles were seen negotiating muddy water as motorists attempted to make their way through the affected stretch.
Shah Alam faced a particularly frustrating repeat performance. Flooding returned to Jalan Keluli 1C near i-City in Section 7 for the second consecutive day, following heavy rain between noon and 1 p.m. On Tuesday, October 27, floodwaters along the Federal Highway near i-City had already caused severe congestion for motorists traveling from Bukit Raja in Klang.
DRAINAGE UNDER PRESSUREThe Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) attributed the latest flooding near i-City partly to elevated water levels in Sungai Rasah, particularly around the Tugu Keris area, where the river overflowed.
The council said it was working with the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID), the Public Works Department (JKR), and i-City management to address the problem. Measures include improving drainage capacity through scupper drains, installing flap gates at drain inlets and outlets, and strengthening routine maintenance.
These interventions may help, but recurring floods at the same locations underline the challenge of managing sudden volumes of rainwater in a heavily developed urban environment. Drainage systems must cope with runoff from roads, buildings, and paved surfaces, while rising river levels can restrict how quickly water is discharged.
MORE STORMS IN THE FORECASTThe latest flooding coincided with a thunderstorm warning issued by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) on Wednesday. The advisory covered Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and several Selangor districts, including Petaling, Sepang, Hulu Langat, and Gombak, with heavy rain and strong winds expected until 8 p.m.
Malaysia’s monsoon transition period, which began in early October, typically brings thunderstorms and intense rainfall, particularly during the afternoon and early evening. Such conditions can trigger flash floods with little warning.
For Klang Valley residents, the immediate advice is familiar: monitor weather alerts, allow extra travel time during heavy rain, and avoid driving through floodwaters. The longer-term challenge is equally familiar, however: ensuring that drainage infrastructure, river management, and urban planning can keep pace with the region’s development.
Until then, another afternoon downpour may bring more than a welcome break from the heat. It may also mean another round of flooded roads and disrupted journeys.
