KUCHING, Nov 3: A 45-year-old woman lost nearly RM30,000 after falling victim to an online investment scam involving a non-existent share investment scheme.
In a statement, Kuching District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the victim came across an investment advertisement on Facebook on Sept 30 and clicked on the link provided.
“The victim was subsequently contacted by an individual who offered an investment opportunity and explained the details of the investment.
“Interested in the offer, the victim was instructed to make several payments purportedly for investment purposes, with the money promised to be refunded together with profits,” he said.
He said that between Oct 5 and 31, the victim made five transactions to five different bank accounts, amounting to RM29,863.
“The victim realised she had been scammed after failing to recover her invested money and the promised profits,” he said.
