Sheriff Country Season 1 Full Recap

After “Fire Country,” CBS Network has come up with its spin-off series, “Sheriff Country,” which tells the story of Sheriff Mickey Fox, the stepsister of California Fire’s Sharon Leone. Starring Morena Baccarin in the lead, “Sheriff County” shows the complexities Mickey faces at work before she becomes the Sheriff. Local politician and businessman Punch wants someone strong for the Sheriff’s position and Mickey finds it weird to know that her friend-cum-fellow deputy Boone is a fellow contender. Things take a turn for the worse when Boone’s rash decision almost leads to a massive car accident while Mickey saves the day at the last moment. Apart from the county office, Mickey is trying hard to cope without her father, Wes, who also happens to be an illegal weed grower. She has divorced her lawyer husband Travis and it pains to see him with her own colleague, Cassidy. Amid all these, Mickey gets into trouble once her daughter, Skye, comes home with blood on her hands and claims that her boyfriend Brandon is lying dead in his house.

Spoilers Ahead

Does Wes Endanger Skye’s Future?

Wes has a habit of cutting corners in life. He has always been like this and since he has entered Mickey’s house, he has been a bad influence on Skye. When Skye’s boyfriend, Brandon, gets stabbed to death and she mistakenly pulls the knife out of the wound, she endangers her stance. Things do not look good for Skye because shortly before Brandon’s murder, he had a serious argument with her, mostly about his habit of carrying pills. Apart from that, the thing that also endangers Skye is the knife itself, which she gifted to Brandon, a couple of weeks ago. Despite knowing all this, Wes actively stops Skye from telling about the fingerprints on the knife to Mickey. He also knows that the knife was bought by Skye and inspires her to hide the receipt. By doing so, Wes does not just invite trouble in Skye’s life, but also Mickey’s; because obviously, these acts make the Sheriff look like just another dirty cop. When the cops arrest Skye and the secret about the receipt comes out, Mickey grows furious and stops talking with Wes. Being someone who has seen how the world works, Wes should have been a bit careful about Skye, since she is facing some serious charges.

Who Killed Brandon?

Brandon did not have many enemies in the county apart from some competitive growers and addicts. However, he was friends with Rick and the latter developed some animosity towards the former. Since Rick was also a recovering addict who could not survive without being under the influence of drugs, he demanded some from Brandon. Eventually, the two of them got into a massive fight (it was probably regarding the prices) and a series of bad decisions led Rick to a moment where he stabbed Brandon to death. Since Rick is Skye’s cousin and also Travis’s sister Miranda’s son, he could not risk anything and contacts her mother for help. Miranda seeks Agent Kane’s help and the latter cleans up Rick’s mess. Kane also keeps the real murder weapon with himself and misleads Mickey towards pursuing local drug dealer Adrian Smith, whom Brandon knew. After Mickey is pinned to the ground by Adrian, Kane shoots him to death, so that he cannot prove his innocence. While Mickey isn’t looking at him, Kane plants the murder weapon into Adrian’s heap of clothes, thus perfectly framing him for Brandon’s murder. In this way, he not only just clears Rick’s name; but also gains Mickey’s trust, who falls in love with him even more than before, without knowing how badly it is going to impact her later.

What Pushes Skye Towards Normalcy?

Skye is a recovering addict who needs absolute care and affection from her family to forget the memories of jail. Unlike other children of her age, Skye lives in a broken home and it’s hard to deal with her parents’ divorce. It’s not easy to be in Skye’s shoes because she has to deal with the never-ending urge to resort to drugs whenever she faces problems in her life. Since she is in her teens, she tends to have conflicting thoughts every now and then – this has the ability to push her towards relapsing, which may turn out to be fatal. After Mickey’s father, Wes, starts to stay in Fox’s house, Skye slowly starts enjoying her time at home. Although Wes is a weed grower in the area (actually, one of the finest), he does not talk about it with Skye at all. Wes realizes her struggles and he is extremely compassionate towards his granddaughter. Actually, Wes is trying his best to keep Skye safe since a part of him regrets being unable to provide Mickey a good childhood. Wes thinks of this as a second chance of redeeming himself and this is why he is so keen on improving his methods. When Wes invites his friends for a jamming session, it initially disturbs Skye but eventually, she grows cheerful. Gradually, Skye starts loving her life exactly the way she used to do before, mainly because of Wes.

How Does Hank Help Mickey Understand Her Bias Towards Cassidy?

Cassidy and Boone are Mickey’s preferred set of deputies – they are the ones who accompany the Sheriff when she is out on a mission. After a new joinee, Hank, notices this pattern, he ends up questioning Mickey’s choice of always  assigning  Cassidy the best cases. Although Cassidy brushes it off, claiming that Mickey is never biased towards her, it is not completely true. Years ago, Mickey rescued Cassidy from a violent atmosphere where the latter faced physical and mental abuse. Since then, Mickey took Cassidy under her wing – she wasn’t just her mentor but a role model who eventually inspired her to be a deputy. There are times when Mickey automatically prefers Cassidy to assist her in tasks that other deputies are also eligible to perform. She does not do it intentionally, it’s just a habit because Mickey knows how worthy Cassidy is. But, from everyone else’s point of view, this endangers both Cassidy’s credibility and Mickey’s integrity. When Mickey realizes this, she starts taking other deputies on serious missions and letting Cassidy take on rigorous desk duties.

Why Can’t Nora And Boone Stay Together As A Couple?

Nora is actually the ex-wife of Boone’s best friend, Jason, who lost his life following a chain of unprecedented events. As time goes by, Nora and Boone grow closer and their bond gradually blooms into a romantic relationship. However, Boone does not prefer to get close to Nora as he thinks that he is breaking his dead partner’s trust. A part of Boone still blames himself for not being able to save Jason. Meanwhile, Nora thinks that Boone does not want to accept labels in their bond, so she does not want to get her heart broken. She is yet to heal from the trauma of seeing her dead husband’s body – every time Boone comes closer to her, Nora is scared that one day, she will lose him, too. Although Boone wants to stay transparent with Nora, he develops a habit of lying to her to make her feel less scared. While this temporarily solves the problem, Boone soon gets seriously injured and risks his life when he runs through a stream of bullets after Enoch Barlow’s men attack the station. When Nora finds out, she breaks up with him.

What Improves Mickey And Boone’s Relationship?

Mickey and Boone’s healthy rivalry is a result of the clash regarding the Sheriff’s position. Years ago, they were partners who used to take a ride across town, discussing their personal lives over coffee. This dynamic faces severe strain as time goes by until the two of them reunite to save a pregnant woman Val, who has witnessed mob boss Boz’s cruelties. While trying to save Val from the armed henchmen, both Mickey and Boone understand that there’s no point in wanting to ride solo because they have a unique chemistry as partners. Mickey does not like to depend on others (she hates the fact that she had to depend on Travis on different occasions) – however, when Barlow’s men stormed the county office and shot Travis, it was Boone who was ready to sacrifice himself for the sake of others. It is Mickey and Boone’s partnership that got them through that night. Mickey finally realizes that she may be the Sheriff but as long as she has worthy deputies like Boone in her department, she will never have to worry about someone having her back.

Does Cassidy Get Her Closure?

Years ago, Cassidy’s sister, Zoey, disappeared at the Blood Moon Festival and since then, nobody has discovered any trace of her. Even after becoming a cop, Cassidy  did not have the courage to look Zoey’s name up in the system. As long as she is not found, there’s a possibility that she may be alive. However, this has led to a huge difference between Cassidy and her own mother, Laurie, who has stopped talking to her daughter. After Hank urges and Cassidy looks into the pattern where girls go missing in the Blood Moon Festival, she discovers that there’s a serial killer who is roaming free. Fortunately, even after Cassidy gets kidnapped by the murderer, Ellis Monroe, Mickey and Boone follow their way to him through security footage. Cassidy finally gets to know that Zoey was also a victim like her who was tied to Ellis’s basement before he killed her. This provides Cassidy the closure that she always needed – once she gets out, she finally faces her mother, which she should have done long ago.

Why Does Mickey Stop Talking To Wes?

For months, Wes has been at Mickey’s house, making it seem like he has changed his ways. After the incident which led to Skye’s arrest, Mickey forgave Wes. However, Wes does not learn from his mistakes and joins hands with Tanner and Joe, who illegally grow their weed. Even after receiving his legal weed license, Wes risks his life to escape with a truck full of illegal cannabis and sells it for three million to a customer. When the cops chase Wes, he dumps the bag of money and runs away, letting Boone take it. However, the DEA intervenes because Joe was connected to a case against the cartel. Things take a wild turn after Wes makes a deal with one of his exes, Ruby, who is also a locksmith, to pick the lock off the DEA’s truck. Wes also steals Mickey’s uniform and lets Joe’s friend Luna wear it in order to fool the DEA agents. This robbery creates a massive stir and DEA Chief Maria (who is actually Mickey’s mother and it will be addressed later) starts investigating Edgewater County. Wes endangers Mickey’s future by working against her while staying in her house – when he finally confesses, it leaves the Sheriff in tears and she stops talking to him completely.

What Causes Mickey To Inspect Miranda?

Mickey and Boone try their best to figure out the heads behind Emerald Eden, a company that’s muscling into Edgewater. When the company’s lawyer ends up purchasing acres of land in the Sheriff auction, it sends Mickey into a stir because she gets alerted by it. Mickey and the Edgewater County are unaware that Emerald Eden is Miranda’s shell company and she is funneling funds through it. It also turns out that the lawyer and Mack Maguire are both dead – even if Mickey wants, she cannot learn any new information about Miranda. It is Mickey’s instinct which tells her that something is wrong and Miranda is hiding a lot of information behind the closed doors of her office. When Miranda announces that her company, Fraley Horizons, is going to legitimize cannabis, Mickey loses it. Looking at the proposed layout of Miranda’s company grounds, Mickey realizes that it is the exact same as the area where growers have sold their land to Emerald Eden.

Why Does Skye Give Up Her Sobriety Chip?

Skye is one of the proudest people on the planet and after six months of staying sober, she earns the Sobriety chip. Only she knows how tough it is to stay away from the drugs that once she depended on whenever things went wrong. After Skye tries to help Mickey by breaking into Maria’s safe (all thanks to Wes’s instructions), she gets caught by Rick. Skye’s cousin does not just try to silence her, but almost kills her with a Fentanyl overdose. This impacts Skye’s mindset much more than it harms her physically and it explains why she suffers so much once she regains consciousness. Skye’s associate, Hazel, tries to convince the former that she should never give up the chip because it was Rick who pushed the drugs into her system. Unfortunately, Skye knows that she is closer to relapse and that’s why she returns her Sobriety chip to Hazel. Meanwhile, Rick gets killed by Kane because the latter could not risk putting Miranda’s company’s reputations at risk – the DEA agent knows that everything will be in a mess if Skye starts to talk.

When Do Mickey And Boone Realize That Kane Is Mr. X?

When Miranda rushes to report about Rick’s disappearance, both Mickey and Boone have a gut feeling that someone else is playing from behind the curtains all along. Later, Mickey, while attending a call, notices Kane and Miranda secretly communicating among themselves. Although she is shocked, she holds her composure because she couldn’t believe what she saw. Meanwhile, Cassidy’s friend, Andy, who sets up his tent near the same spot where Rick was murdered, confirms that a man stuffed a body in a car and then slipped on ice. Boone also finds it weird and realizes that the two boys, who got caught with Rick’s body in the car boot, are just car thieves who found an abandoned vehicle and tried to get away. Later, Boone sees Kane stacking up paperweights like the stacked up stones that were found close to Maguire’s body. He realizes that the odd bullet found in Maguire’s chest actually belongs to the Mr. X he is looking for and he is none other than Kane. Once Mickey and Boone agree that they are on the same page, the two of them take Maria’s help in coercing Kane into confessing his involvements.

How Does Mickey’s Life Get Completely Changed?

When Mickey traps Kane with the help of Boone and Maria, she does not expect a violent showdown. Most of the time, Mickey has hoped for Kane to come out of the situation alive but sadly, he loses his life while trying to fight the three of them. Luckily, Maria manages to catch his confession on tape and the mission can be considered as a success but the toll it takes on Mickey is inexplicable. Throughout this whole time, Mickey thought Kane is the one she could depend on but it is him who turned out to be an impostor. A part of Mickey hopes that Wes comes out clean but another part does not even want to see his face. Since Travis is busy attending his own clientele, he cannot be there for Mickey and it hurts her to some extent, even if she does not want to admit it. Mickey also knows that Boone is in love with her but considering how things turned out with Kane, she is not ready to play cupid at the workplace again. Amid such a disturbed state of mind, the final blow comes to Mickey soon after Maria announces that she wants the Sheriff to work with Wes. As soon as Wes enters the room, he gets shocked to see Maria – Mickey finally gets to know that after all these years, her mother is not dead, she is alive and doing well. This unimaginable shock is quite difficult to process, even for Mickey, who is one of the strongest Sheriffs Edgewater County has ever got. She will have to fight with her own thoughts before she can even think of putting her trust in someone but in the war ahead, she needs to believe in people. While she has Sharon, Skye and Boone, Mickey should put her trust in people wisely.
